About The Position

The Museum of Modern Art (“MoMA”) is accepting applications for the fifth Museum Fellowship Collaboration between The Studio Museum in Harlem (“The Studio Museum”) and MoMA. Four curatorial fellows will be selected to spend one year at each museum, rotating to the partner institution after their first year for the completion of the two-year program. This fellowship will develop the next generation of thought leaders and museum professionals, and will offer insight into the daily workings of a museum through hands-on work, workshops, public programs, and professional development. The fellows will participate in the essential activities of a curatorial department under the guidance of a supervising staff member. At the Studio Museum, the fellows will be assigned to work with the curatorial staff on exhibitions and permanent collection projects. At MoMA, the fellows will be assigned to either the Department of Drawings and Prints or the Department of Media and Performance. The ideal candidate will be an active collaborator with a wide range of staff across both museums, who is comfortable working in a professional office environment and willing to embrace a full scope of relevant tasks.

Requirements

B.A. or graduate-level degree, ideally with a concentration in art history, curatorial studies, Africana studies, visual culture, or a related field.
Previous involvement within an arts community or arts institution, or write about their desire and specific interests in museums.
Excellent written communications skills.
Function well in a fast-paced team environment.
Manage multiple projects at once with keen attention to detail, adaptability, and a positive attitude.
Demonstrated interest in cultural programming, writing, and research.
Interest in actively engaging with the mission and scale of both partner institutions, the Studio Museum and MoMA.
Must be available to work on-site five days a week in New York City.

Responsibilities

Work independently and collaboratively to gain in-depth experience through enrichment programming and practical learning opportunities.
Participate in the essential activities of a curatorial department under the guidance of a supervising staff member.
Gain experience in areas such as collection management, archives, acquisitions, loans, exhibition research, catalogue production, and administration.
Assist in the logistics, research, planning, and organization of activities and programming generated in their assigned department.
Work with the curatorial staff on exhibitions and permanent collection projects at the Studio Museum.
Be assigned to either the Department of Drawings and Prints or the Department of Media and Performance at MoMA.
