Position Summary: The Day Camp Counselor is responsible for teaching developmentally appropriate STEAM based camp programs and lessons for children in grades 2-10. During camp sessions, the Day Camp Counselor will teach pre-written summer camp curriculum, play games, assist campers with hands-on projects, and explore Taliesin West and Frank Lloyd Wright’s legacy with campers. They will also assist with camp paperwork, activity set-up up, and daily clean-up. In an initial meeting with Taliesin West Education staff, the Day Camp Counselor will be introduced to the respective camp curricula and become familiar with camp outline, goals, timeline, and tasks. NOTE: This is a full-time seasonal position for which candidates MUST be available throughout the summer camp season that runs Mondays-Fridays from June 1-July 31. There is optional time off the week of June 29-July 3. Compensation: Hourly rate of $17.50, 40 hours per week. Position begins May 26 and ends August 7.

Requirements

  • Associates or Bachelors Degree, or enrollment in a degree-granting program focused in a STEAM field including architecture, education, history, art history, museum studies, or a related field
  • Must have previous experience in formal or informal education settings with children, preferably obtained in classrooms, museums, zoos, or camp programs
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including active listening ability while interacting with diverse audiences including parents, children, fellow staff, volunteers, and the general public; ability to interpret and provide clear instructions and specifications within a teaching environment
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software
  • Adherence to safety and infection control practices and policies at all times
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to multitask/re-prioritize when elements of assignments or projects change
  • CPR/First Aid Certification preferred, or ability to complete certification coursework within initial training period on-the-job
  • Must be punctual, dependable, flexible and adaptable
  • Maintain an upbeat, positive attitude while working collaboratively and executing a variety of tasks crucial to efficient operations

Responsibilities

  • Implementing pre-written lesson plans
  • Creating and refining educational activities and crafts for children in grades 2-10.
  • Teaching creative, interactive, age-appropriate lessons to approximately 20 campers a day, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
  • Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all campers by understanding and adhering to all Taliesin West policies and procedures.
  • Setting up and taking down tables, chairs, and other classroom supplies/equipment.
  • Making copies and preparing materials for camp activities.
  • Assisting with distributing and cleaning up snacks and lunches for camp.
  • Attending mandatory camp meetings.
  • Interacting with parents and caregivers in a positive, helpful manner.
  • Delivering methods for feedback from camps to help evaluate program success.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
