About The Position

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette/telegram.com, part of the USA TODAY Network, is seeking a self-starting, digitally savvy reporter to cover City Hall in Worcester, Massachusetts, the second-largest city in New England. This role will also assist with municipal government reporting in other Central Massachusetts communities and provide coverage of upcoming elections. The ideal candidate will go beyond meeting coverage by getting to know Worcester's neighborhoods, develop sources across the political spectrum and among community stakeholders, and produce engaging content that speaks to residents' real-world challenges. The reporter will have strong time management skills, be capable of providing concise and accurate stories on tight deadlines, and balance longer-range enterprise and investigative work. The ability to take photos and video is essential. Multilingual applicants are strongly encouraged. The job requires an understanding of social media, audience metrics and SEO techniques; quick, tight, lively writing; and a competitive mindset.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3 or more years of professional journalism experience or significant internship experience, preferred.
  • High-level writing, communication and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well on deadline.
  • Ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and publication ready.
  • Understanding of reporting ethics and sourcing.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Facility with AI and automation and experienced in using it to enhance their journalism.
  • Must be authorized to work in the applicable location.
