About The Position
The Republican Herald in Pottsville, Pa., is looking for a full-time news reporter with a proactive approach to crime and breaking news coverage. This role requires a knack for balancing fast-paced daily news with in-depth enterprise work, alongside the confidence to ask difficult questions in high-pressure environments. Candidates must reside in or relocate to Pottsville, PA.
Requirements
- Degree in journalism, communication or equivalent experience
- Relevant experience in news reporting and writing, using social media, creating enterprising content
- Capacity to work well under deadline pressure
- Understanding of the distinct demands of emerging and existing platforms, including web, mobile, and print
- Professional-level grasp of proper grammar, spelling, punctuation
- Ability to write accurately on deadline and to multitask and perform in a fast-paced deadline driven environment
- Must be willing to submit and pass the necessary required checks
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation
- Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
Nice To Haves
- 1–3 years of experience at a daily newspaper or online news outlet preferred, though candidates with a strong college portfolio are welcome

- Employ creativity every day to conceive of stories, produce or secure visuals, get sources to cooperate, corroborate facts and present information to readers in the most relevant, interesting way
- Prioritize being digitally focused, maximizing audience engagement through our website for breaking news
- Create news and features content that is strong on grammar, punctuation, clarity and accuracy
- Take the initiative to fact-check, run background checks and confirm information before publication
- Cultivate beats, where appropriate, and sources
- Social media audience engagement on multiple platforms
