About The Position

The Multi-Purpose Clerk may be assigned to one of several store departments, including Center Store, Produce, Meat/Seafood, Bakery/Deli, or Janitorial. The role promotes sales, answers customer questions, responds to product requests, and accurately places special orders. The clerk follows safe food-handling procedures and keeps work areas clean, orderly, and free of safety hazards. Duties also include receiving, inspecting, and logging products for shipment accuracy and quality, as well as stocking, rotating, and merchandising products to maintain freshness and department appeal. Department-specific work may include operating a checkstand and performing point-of-sale and inventory activities; preparing and maintaining produce and floral displays; packaging and labeling meat, seafood, bakery, or deli products; assisting customers at the seafood counter; taking special orders; or performing store cleaning and sanitation. Some assignments may involve operating department or janitorial equipment. Across departments, clerks sweep and mop sales floors, front ends, back rooms, and refrigerated areas. They may operate a forklift if authorized and certified, or a baler if authorized, and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age.
Excellent customer service and verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work with a sense of urgency and self-motivation.
Ability to be proactive, show initiative and enthusiasm, and remain flexible on the job.
High school diploma or GED, or additional job experience.
Six months of related experience.
Must be available to work a variety of required retail hours.
Frequent standing and other physical movements; ability to lift up to 40 pounds without assistance.

Responsibilities

Promote sales in the assigned department and answer customer questions and product requests.
Accurately place special orders.
Follow safe food-handling procedures and maintain clean, orderly work areas free from safety hazards.
Receive, inspect, and log products for shipment accuracy and quality.
Stock, rotate, and merchandise products to maintain freshness and department appeal.
Depending on assignment, operate the checkstand; order, unload, and stock products; and perform point-of-sale and inventory activities.
Depending on assignment, prepare produce, floral, meat, seafood, bakery, or deli products for display and keep department areas and equipment clean.
Provide customer service at the seafood counter and take special orders for items such as custom meat cuts, holiday items, cakes, and party trays, as applicable to assignment.
Depending on assignment, maintain store cleanliness and sanitation, including cleaning floors, restrooms, work areas, equipment, carts, and the parking lot, and emptying trash.
Sweep and mop the sales floor, front end, back rooms, and refrigerated areas.
Operate a forklift if authorized and certified, or a baler if authorized.
Perform other duties as assigned.
