About The Position

The exploration of fundamental musical concepts through development of aural, oral, written, and analytical skills. Topics include staff notation, clefs, major and minor keys, time signatures, meter and rhythm, intervals, triads, 7th chords, foundational principles of counterpoint, Roman numerals, chord symbols and other notational conventions, cadences. The course contextualizes Western systems of notation within a global context. Cross-listed with MUMI121.

Requirements

  • PhD in Music Theory or PhD in Music (other than Music Theory) with a publication record in Music Theory scholarship in either Classical or Rock genres.
  • Experience teaching music theory at the university level, either as an instructor or as a Teaching Assistant whose duties include a significant component of in-class teaching.
  • Commitment to principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in the consideration of course materials.
  • Currency in music theory scholarship in approaches to both Classical and Rock genres.

  • Ability to teach both MUAC101 and MUAC102 in the same academic year.

Responsibilities

  • Teach MUAC101 E – Theory I: Foundations (Fall 2026)
  • Develop and deliver course materials related to fundamental musical concepts, including aural, oral, written, and analytical skills.
  • Cover topics such as staff notation, clefs, major and minor keys, time signatures, meter and rhythm, intervals, triads, 7th chords, foundational principles of counterpoint, Roman numerals, chord symbols, notational conventions, and cadences.
  • Contextualize Western systems of notation within a global context.
  • Potentially teach MUAC102 in the same academic year if preference is given.

Benefits

  • Salary: $10,212.40
  • Appointment in accordance with the Contract Teaching Faculty and Part-time Librarians Collective Agreement
