About The Position

This full-time MRI Technologist position is located at Atrium Health University City and operates on weekend nights, specifically Friday through Sunday from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM. The role involves performing MRI scans, preparing patients for procedures, administering IV contrast, and ensuring the technical quality of images. The technologist is responsible for patient care, maintaining safety protocols, operating radiology computer systems, and ensuring the work area is clean and stocked. This position is eligible for a sign-on bonus.

Requirements

• Graduate of an institution accredited by an agency that ARRT recognizes in Radiologic or Nuclear Medicine Technology.
• Active enrollment in an MRI ARRT registry eligible or ARMRIT program.
• MRI registry must be obtained within 1 year of hire.
• BLS certification.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development.
• Demonstrates the skills and competency appropriate to the ages, culture, developmental stages, and special needs of the patient population served.
• Requires moderate to heavy physical efforts in lifting and moving patients, equipment and supplies.
• Occasional standing, walking, and sitting during normal operation.
• Frequently may be to stretch, bend twist, squat or kneel in the daily operation of the MRI department.
• May be exposed to various physical conditions throughout the day such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs, being near moving equipment.
• Required to use radiation safety guidelines to prevent exposure to ionizing radiation.

Responsibilities

• Examines requests and verifies orders on each assigned patient, referring and questioning orders to the Radiologist before performing the exam and contacting the ordering provider for discrepancies.
• Properly identifies patients using two identifiers and assists patients while offering a brief explanation of the procedures.
• Prepares patients for the procedure with a full explanation and documents on appropriate worksheets, interviewing patients for a complete medical history.
• Reviews in-patients, ER, and outpatients EMR’s to obtain pertinent clinical history and records medical history on requisitions.
• Correlates other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed.
• Assumes responsibility for the exam from beginning to completion of dictated results.
• Prepares and administers IV contrast according to departmental protocols, recording contrast type and amount upon request.
• Evaluates technical quality of images and consults with a Radiologist if needed.
• Recognizes abnormal anatomy and processes any additional, reconstructed images, and/or measurements as instructed.
• Performs basic patient care functions and informs appropriate nursing personnel of any changes in the patient’s condition.
• Initiates life support measures for patients when necessary and assists in “code blue” procedures during medical emergencies.
• Performs MRI scanning and assists Physicians/PA during invasive procedures.
• Practices proper sterile technique and performs all invasive procedures in accordance with bloodborne pathogens, isolation, and infection control policies and procedures.
• Is authorized to obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner.
• Practices principles of radiation safety for self, employees, patients, and family members, following appropriate radiation safety standards.
• Reports malfunctioning equipment to the department director/manager/supervisor and clinical engineering/radiology engineer.
• Maintains knowledge and skills to work safely in an environment that can create significant exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease.
• Adheres to the hospital fire and safety procedures and attends all in-service classes and completes all required safety modules.
• Operates radiology computer system to include entering orders and charging procedures/supplies, and documents contrast administration in the MAR.
• Maintains assigned work area in a neat and orderly fashion, keeps area stocked, and cleans all work areas to promote cleanliness.
• Assists other medical personnel, such as anesthesia, when performing exams or services in conjunction with a MRI scan.
• Maintains knowledge of all MRI safety requirements for both staff and patients while in and around magnetic fields.
