About The Position

This position is responsible for examining requests and verifying orders on each assigned patient, referring and questioning orders to the Radiologist before performing the exam, and contacting the ordering provider when there are discrepancies. The MRI Technologist I properly identifies patients using two identifiers, assists patients, and provides a brief explanation of the procedures. They prepare patients for the procedure with a full explanation and document on appropriate worksheets. The role involves interviewing patients for a complete medical history, reviewing EMRs to obtain pertinent clinical history, and recording medical history on requisitions. They also correlate other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed. The technologist assumes responsibility for the exam from beginning to completion of dictated results, prepares and administers IV contrast according to departmental protocols, and records contrast type and amount upon request. They evaluate the technical quality of images, consult with a Radiologist if needed, and recognize abnormal anatomy, processing any additional, reconstructed images, and/or measurements as instructed. The role includes performing basic patient care functions, informing appropriate nursing personnel of any changes in the patient’s condition, initiating life support measures when necessary, and assisting in “code blue” procedures during medical emergencies. The MRI Technologist I performs MRI scanning and assists Physicians/PA during invasive procedures, practicing proper sterile technique and adhering to bloodborne pathogens, isolation, and infection control policies. They are authorized to obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner. The position requires practicing radiation safety principles for self, employees, patients, and family members, and following appropriate radiation safety standards. They report malfunctioning equipment to the department director/manager/supervisor and clinical engineering/radiology engineer. The role maintains knowledge and skills required to work safely in an environment that can create significant exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease, and adheres to hospital fire and safety procedures, attending all in-service classes and completing all required safety modules. The technologist operates the radiology computer system, including entering orders and charging procedures/supplies, and documents contrast administration in the MAR. They maintain the assigned work area in a neat and orderly fashion, keep the area stocked, and clean all work areas to promote cleanliness. Additionally, they assist other medical personnel, such as anesthesia, when performing exams or services in conjunction with an MRI scan, and maintain knowledge of all MRI safety requirements for both staff and patients while in and around magnetic fields.

Requirements

• Graduate of an institution accredited by an agency that ARRT recognizes in Radiologic or Nuclear Medicine Technology.
• Active enrollment in an MRI ARRT registry eligible or ARMRIT program required.
• MRI registry must be obtained within 1 year of hire.
• BLS required.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development.
• Demonstrates the skills and competency appropriate to the ages, culture, developmental stages, and special needs of the patient population served.
• Requires moderate to heavy physical efforts in lifting and moving patients, equipment and supplies.
• Occasional standing, walking, and sitting during normal operation.
• Frequently may be required to stretch, bend twist, squat or kneel in the daily operation of the MRI department.
• May be exposed to various physical conditions throughout the day such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs, being near moving equipment.
• Required to use radiation safety guidelines to prevent exposure to ionizing radiation.
