About The Position

The MRI Technologist is responsible for examining requests and verifying orders on each assigned patient. They refer and question orders to the Radiologist before performing the exam and contact the ordering provider when there are discrepancies. The technologist properly identifies patients using two identifiers, assists them, and offers a brief explanation of the procedures. They prepare patients for the procedure with a full explanation, document on appropriate worksheets, and interview patients for a complete medical history. Additionally, they review in-patients, ER, and outpatients EMR’s to obtain pertinent clinical history, record medical history on requisitions, and correlate other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed. The technologist assumes responsibility for the exam from beginning to completion of dictated results, prepares and administers IV contrast according to departmental protocols, and records contrast type and amount upon request. They evaluate the technical quality of images, consult with a Radiologist if needed, and recognize abnormal anatomy, processing any additional, reconstructed images, and/or measurements as instructed. Basic patient care functions are performed, and appropriate nursing personnel are informed of any changes in the patient’s condition. Life support measures are initiated when necessary, and assistance is provided during "code blue" procedures. The technologist performs MRI scanning and assists Physicians/PA during invasive procedures, practicing proper sterile technique and performing all invasive procedures in accordance with bloodborne pathogens, isolation, and infection control policies. They are authorized to obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner. Radiation safety principles are practiced for self, employees, patients, and family members, and appropriate radiation safety standards are followed. Malfunctioning equipment is reported to the department director/manager/supervisor and clinical engineering/radiology engineer. Knowledge and skills are maintained to work safely in an environment that can create significant exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease. Hospital fire and safety procedures are adhered to, and all in-service classes and required safety modules are completed. The radiology computer system is operated, including entering orders and charging procedures/supplies, and contrast administration is documented in the MAR. The assigned work area is maintained in a neat and orderly fashion, kept fully stocked, and cleaned to promote cleanliness. Assistance is provided to other medical personnel, such as anesthesia, when performing exams or services in conjunction with an MRI scan. Knowledge of all MRI safety requirements for both staff and patients while in and around magnetic fields is maintained.

Requirements

Graduate of an institution accredited by an agency that ARRT recognizes in Radiologic or Nuclear Medicine Technology.
Active enrollment in an MRI ARRT registry eligible or ARMRIT program.
MRI registry must be obtained within 1 year of hire.
BLS.
Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development.
Demonstrates the skills and competency appropriate to the ages, culture, developmental stages, and special needs of the patient population served.
Requires moderate to heavy physical efforts in lifting and moving patients, equipment and supplies.
Occasional standing, walking, and sitting during normal operation.
Frequently may be to stretch, bend twist, squat or kneel in the daily operation of the MRI department.
May be exposed to various physical conditions throughout the day such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs , being near moving equipment.
Required to use radiation safety guidelines to prevent exposure to ionizing radiation.

Responsibilities

Evaluates technical quality of images and consults with a Radiologist if needed.
Recognizes abnormal anatomy and processes any additional, reconstructed images, and/or measurements as instructed.
Performs basic patient care functions.
Informs appropriate nursing personnel of any changes in the patient’s condition.
Initiates life support measures for patients when necessary.
Assists in “code blue” procedures during medical emergencies.
Performs MRI scanning and assists Physicians/PA during invasive procedures.
Practices proper sterile technique in the preparation of necessary supplies.
Performs all invasive procedures in accordance with bloodborne pathogens, isolation, and infection control policies and procedures.
Is authorized to obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner.
Practices principle of radiation safety for self, employees, patients and family members.
Follows appropriate radiation safety standards.
Reports malfunctioning equipment to the department director/manager/supervisor and clinical engineering /radiology engineer.
Maintains knowledge and skills to work safely in an environment that can create significant exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease.
Adheres to the hospital fire and safety procedures.
Attends all in-service classes and completes all required safety modules.

Keeps area completely stocked.
Cleans all work areas to promote cleanliness in the workplace.

Maintains knowledge of all MRI safety requirements for both staff and patients while in and around magnetic fields.
