About The Position

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed at moving the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts. The Transportation division is seeking a Motor Vehicle Supervisor to support the daily operations at Transportation which directly support imperative operations of Rikers Island. Under general supervision, supervises automotive operations of a departmental garage or automotive service facility and/or is responsible for the dispatching of the personnel, motor vehicles and equipment assigned to a large garage.

Requirements

  • All candidates must be employed by an NYC agency and be permanent in the title of Motor Vehicle Operator
  • Must have a CDL B license
  • One year of permanent service in the title of Motor Vehicle Operator; or
  • One year of full-time satisfactory experience as a motor vehicle dispatcher or manager of an automotive service garage.
  • A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York.

Nice To Haves

  • one year in the title of Motor Vehicle Supervisor; or
  • one additional year of the full-time experience described in “2” above in a large automotive service garage.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules for subordinate personnel to perform servicing, minor repairing, and storage of automotive vehicles.
  • Inspects garage activities and facilities to ensure compliance with established standards and practices.
  • Investigates complaints on automotive servicing and operations.
  • Receives reports on the condition of motor vehicles and equipment repaired or needing repairs; directs the performance of minor repairs and refers major repairs to appropriate repair sections.
  • Reviews the utilization of motor vehicles and equipment by the divisions of a department to determine efficient schedules for storage and servicing, and economical employment of facilities and garage personnel.
  • Initiates requisitions for needed supplies and automotive servicing equipment; works with vendors to obtain servicing, repairs, equipment and materials.
  • Keeps records on matters such as staff attendance, daily consumption of gasoline and oil, and times of departure and arrival of motor vehicles.
  • Investigates accidents involving assigned vehicles; prepares and reviews accident reports.
  • Checks condition of incoming and outgoing motor vehicles.
  • May service motor vehicles in emergency situations.
