About The Position

Heavy Equipment Mechanic (EAGLE 2026-25682): Bowhead seeks a Motor Vehicle Mechanic to join our team in support of the Maintenance and Supply Divisions at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Aberdeen, MD. The Maintenance Division Motor Vehicle Mechanic performs a combination of tasks to support departmental operations. Typical duties include rebuilding and repairing major assemblies of internal combustion automobiles, buses, trucks, or tractors. This position is governed by a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), and employees are required to join after beginning employment.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required in addition to at least two (2+) years’ experience as a motor vehicle mechanic.
  • Must possess a valid state-issued CDL and be able to obtain/maintain a forklift license.
  • Basic to intermediate level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
  • Bend, Squat, Stoop, Crouch, Lean, Sit, and Balance.
  • Work with power/automated hand tools.
  • Lift/carry/push/slide up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand for long periods of time
  • Repeat the same movements.
  • Work in an automotive repair shop around moving objects, vehicles, machinery with moving parts, and confined spaces.
  • Exposure to adverse excessive noise, weather conditions, exhaust fumes, gasoline, diesel fuel, and other vehicle fluids/lubricants.
  • Must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Public Trust level.
  • Due to the location of this work, U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes malfunctions.
  • Repairs, rebuilds, or overhauls major assemblies of internal combustion automobiles, buses, trucks, or tractors.
  • Diagnoses the source of trouble and determines the extent of repairs required.
  • Replaces worn or broken parts such as piston rings, bearings, or other engine parts.
  • Grinds and adjusts valves.
  • Rebuilds carburetors.
  • Overhauls transmissions.
  • Repairs fuel injection, lighting, and ignition systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.
