About The Position

The Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Ohio State Highway Patrol is hiring a Motor Vehicle Inspector to report to 3201 North Main Street in Findlay, Ohio. The role inspects motor vehicles—including motor homes, campers, school buses, church buses, self-assembled vehicles, and salvage vehicles—to determine whether they are unsafe or improperly equipped and whether equipment is properly adjusted or repaired as required by law. Inspections involve entering and exiting vehicles, bending and stooping, and using a mechanic’s creeper to crawl beneath vehicles and visually check mechanical components. The inspector uses Ohio State Highway Patrol databases to enter and retrieve information, completes inspection forms, and affixes decals to vehicles that pass. The position also operates a state-owned inspection vehicle to transport equipment and informs owners or operators about repairs or adjustments needed to make vehicles safe. Work is based in Findlay, with scheduled hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; working days and hours may vary. The job is permanent and full-time, with compensation of $23.65 per hour. Work may take place outdoors and expose the inspector to weather, dirt, rust, car fumes, burns from hot engines, highway noise, fast-moving vehicles, and angry vehicle owners. Inspections may also be conducted in confined spaces beneath vehicles. Selected applicants may be subject to BCI and FBI fingerprint checks, a background check including a polygraph examination, comparative analysis, and/or drug testing.
