About The Position

The Motor Equipment Metal Mechanic (Motor Vehicle Body Repairer) repairs damaged bodies and body parts of automotive vehicles, such as automobiles, buses, and light trucks according to repair manuals, using hand tools and power tools. This role involves removing upholstery, accessories, electrical and hydraulic window, seat-operating equipment, and trim to gain access to vehicle body and fender. The mechanic positions blocks against the surface of dented areas and beats the opposite surface to remove dents using a hammer, and fills depressions with solder or other plastic material. They remove damaged fenders, panels, and grills using wrenches and cutting torches, and bolt or weld replacements. The mechanic straightens bent frames using a hydraulic jack and pulling device, and files, grinds, and sands repaired surfaces using power tools and hand tools. Refinishing of repaired surfaces is done using a paint spray gun and sander. The role may also include aiming headlights, aligning wheels, and bleeding hydraulic brake systems. Assignments will involve responsibility for planning and conducting a complete project of relatively limited scope or a portion of a larger and more diverse project. The supervisor outlines objectives, requirements, and design approaches, and completed work is reviewed for technical adequacy and satisfaction of requirements. The mechanic receives technical advice and/or guidance from the supervisor and/or appropriate subject matter experts/professionals. They may plan schedules and assist with directing the work of lower or lateral level technicians, and may train and be assisted by lower level technicians. Duties will be varied.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and specific training and thorough knowledge in the particular area of facility maintenance, plus a broad knowledge of other disciplines such as general math, etc.
  • Minimum qualifications of five (5) years documented, verifiable work experience in the metal mechanic field.
  • This position will require a pre-employment test of structural welding abilities based on customer requirements, prints and materials used.
  • Good written and spoken communication and analytical skills and a working knowledge of basic computer systems and software programs is required.
  • Must have a valid and current state driver's license.
  • Must understand and be able to use Technical Manuals.
  • Must be able to complete paperwork associated with vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to manipulate and use hand tools and hydraulic equipment.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Must be able to speak, read, write and understand English.
  • Passing a pre-employment drug screen and a government background check is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
  • US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a National Agency Check (NAC) within 60 days of hire if required.
  • Must be available for any shift.
  • Willing to work weekends and other hours as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Performs journeyman welding in maintenance and repair shops on parts and bodies for mobile industrial equipment.
  • Plans, lays out, fabricates, assembles, installs and repairs metal body parts necessary to recondition and modify mobile and non-mobile equipment.
  • Modify body parts.
  • Install items required by various Maintenance Work Order Requests (MWOR's), such as cabs, cowls, aprons, doors, bodies, hoods, various metal containers and frames.
  • Provide coordination, on-the-job assistance, and/or limited technical direction to employees performing similar work.
  • Plan and schedule work from authorized work orders and perform quality assurance and quality control functions in process and upon completion.
  • Perform routine and non-routine troubleshooting/problem identification and resolution.
  • Respond to various types of emergencies and provide assistance as appropriate based on skills, knowledge, and ability.
  • Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.
