About The Position

The Ohio Department of Public Safety - Ohio State Highway Patrol is seeking a Motor Carrier Enforcement Inspector. This role involves documenting and reporting economic violations with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO), investigating assigned complaints, and making on-site recommendations to correct violations. The inspector will utilize portable laptop and other computer equipment, maintain public relations with various stakeholders, and assist other law enforcement personnel. Key duties also include preparing and delivering presentations or training related to highway safety and compliance, and testifying in court regarding violations. The position requires successful completion of all required in-service training programs and maintaining annual certification requirements for North American standard training, including LEADS certification within 6 months of employment and re-certification every two years. This is an essential position, critical to the continued operations of the Ohio Department of Public Safety during public safety emergencies, requiring reporting for duty during such times.

Requirements

  • 6 mos. exp. in enforcing commercial motor vehicle laws or regulations; AND 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in public relations; AND valid driver’s license.
  • 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in motor carrier inspection or commercial vehicle maintenance; AND 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in public relations; AND valid driver’s license.
  • Valid Driver’s license required.
  • Successful completion of all required in-service training programs.
  • Must maintain annual certification requirements for all North American standard training to conduct inspections of federal regulations (e.g., level I, hazardous materials, motor coach & cargo tank).
  • Must successfully obtain LEADS certification 6 months after employment.
  • Must re-certify in LEADS every two years as mandated by Ohio Administrative Code 4501:2-10-03 (C)(4).

Responsibilities

  • Documents & reports economic violations with Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO).
  • Investigates assigned complaints regarding violation of PUCO rules & regulations.
  • Utilizes portable laptop & other computer equipment.
  • Makes on-site recommendation to correct violations.
  • Provides assistance where possible.
  • Maintains effective public relations with drivers, company representatives, law enforcement officers & others to ensure compliance with state & federal safety.
  • Assists other inspectors, troopers & local law enforcement.
  • Prepares & delivers presentations &/or training related to highway safety & compliance with state & federal rules.
  • Testifies in court in regards to violations.
