About The Position

The State of Ohio, Department of Public Safety - Ohio State Highway Patrol is seeking a Motor Vehicle Inspector. This role involves inspecting various types of motor vehicles to ensure they meet safety and equipment standards as required by law. The inspector will also be responsible for informing owners of necessary repairs, completing inspection forms, and operating a state-owned inspection vehicle. This position is located in Cambridge, Ohio, and operates from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with potential variations in working days and hours. Requirements

  • 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in automotive maintenance & repair &/or mechanical vehicle inspections.
  • 6 mo. exp. utilizing personal computer & associated business office applications (Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook.).
  • Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
  • Valid Driver’s license required.
  • Applicants MUST explain how they meet the required computer experience within their current/previous work history.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect motor vehicles including motor homes, campers, school buses, church buses, self-assembled vehicles, & salvage vehicles to determine whether they are unsafe or improperly equipped, or that equipment is in proper adjustment or repair as required by law.
  • Enter & exit vehicles & bend, stoop & utilize mechanics' "creeper" in order to crawl under vehicle to visually check vehicle mechanical components.
  • Enter & retrieve information using numerous Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) databases.
  • Complete inspection forms & affix inspection decals to those vehicles which pass.
  • Operate state owned motor vehicle inspection vehicle to transport equipment used in motor vehicle inspection.
  • Inform the owner &/or operator of repairs or adjustments which are necessary to place the vehicle in safe condition.
