About The Position

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is seeking a Motor Vehicle Inspector to join their team. This role involves inspecting various types of motor vehicles, including motor homes, campers, school buses, church buses, self-assembled vehicles, and salvage vehicles, to ensure they meet safety and equipment standards as required by law. The inspector will enter and exit vehicles, bend, stoop, and use a creeper to crawl under vehicles to visually check mechanical components. Additionally, the inspector will utilize OSHP databases to enter and retrieve information, complete inspection forms, affix inspection decals, operate a state-owned inspection vehicle, and inform owners of necessary repairs. This position is crucial for maintaining traffic safety and ensuring vehicles on the road are in proper working condition.

Requirements

  • 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in automotive maintenance & repair &/or mechanical vehicle inspections.
  • 6 mo. exp. utilizing personal computer & associated business office applications (Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook.).
  • Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
  • Valid Driver’s license required.
  • Applicants MUST explain how they meet the required computer experience within their current/previous work history.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect motor vehicles including motor homes, campers, school buses, church buses, self-assembled vehicles, & salvage vehicles to determine whether they are unsafe or improperly equipped, or that equipment is in proper adjustment or repair as required by law.
  • Enter & exit vehicles & bend, stoop & utilize mechanics' "creeper" in order to crawl under vehicle to visually check vehicle mechanical components.
  • Enter & retrieve information using numerous Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) databases.
  • Complete inspection forms & affix inspection decals to those vehicles which pass.
  • Operate state owned motor vehicle inspection vehicle to transport equipment used in motor vehicle inspection.
  • Inform the owner &/or operator of repairs or adjustments which are necessary to place the vehicle in safe condition.
