About The Position

Responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the Mortgage Department. This role is an actively engaged leader responsible for the overall performance, effectiveness, and continuous improvement of the department. The manager will lead and develop mortgage employees while remaining closely engaged in day-to-day operations and providing direct support when workload, complexity, or business needs require. This position requires a deep understanding of the full mortgage process and a broad organizational perspective, recognizing how decisions within Mortgage impact members, other departments, risk, compliance, financial performance, and the Credit Union overall. The role demands independent judgment and initiative in identifying opportunities, addressing challenges, developing solutions, making sound decisions, and providing thoughtful recommendations to senior leadership. The manager is responsible for continually evaluating the department’s effectiveness and identifying opportunities to better serve members, improve efficiency, reduce unnecessary manual processes, leverage technology and automation, strengthen controls, and enhance the overall mortgage experience. Accountable for department results, including service, quality, productivity, compliance, employee performance, workflow, and timely and accurate completion of mortgage lending activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or a related field or an equivalent combination of formal training and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of Credit Union mortgage products and applicable policies and standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable federal and state mortgage and construction lending laws and regulations, including HMDA, fair lending, consumer protection, disclosure appraisal, flood insurance and flood determination requirements, and other applicable mortgage compliance requirements with sufficient understanding to effectively oversee departmental compliance and identify and address potential risks.
  • Thorough knowledge of underwriting, processing, closing, renewing, shipping, and funding functions for first lien, real estate, and home equity lending functions.
  • Familiarity with mortgage programs.
  • At least five (5) years of progressive experience in mortgage lending related positions.
  • Minimum one (1) year supervisory experience.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Good project management abilities.
  • Well organized.
  • Solid communication abilities.
  • Able to meet deadlines.
  • Able to use PC and basic business equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Eight (8) years of progressive experience in mortgage lending related positions.
  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provides active leadership and operational oversight and accountability for the Mortgage Department, maintaining close engagement with departmental activities, performance, and priorities.
  • Develops and implements effective Mortgage Department policies, procedures, and planning.
  • Ensures the effective and efficient completion of Mortgage functions.
  • Provides proactive leadership and accountability for departmental performance, taking initiative to drive operational effectiveness, service excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensures that professional business relations exist with members, vendors, and trade professionals.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication, coordination, and working relations with Credit Union personnel and with management.
  • Attends and participates in meetings as required.
  • Completes reports and records.
  • Ensures that work areas are clean, secure, and well-maintained.
  • Stays informed regarding developments and changes in the mortgage field.
  • Assists with publicity, education, and promotion of the Credit Union.
