About The Position

The Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) is a non-exempt, hybrid inside/outside sales position responsible for originating residential mortgage loans and Home Equity loans through a combination of company-provided leads, internal referrals, and externally developed relationships. The MLO delivers a consultative, compliant, and service-oriented mortgage experience for members seeking home purchase or refinance solutions. This role requires both inbound lead management (inside MLO activities) and relationship-based business development (outside MLO activities), with performance measured by production, conversion, service quality, and compliance adherence. Evening and weekend availability may be required to meet member and partner needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Five (5) to Ten (10) years of residential mortgage lending or related experience.
  • Five (5) or more years of strong consultative sales and relationship building skills.
  • $6MM of outside production in the past 12 months, minimum.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication abilities.
  • Working knowledge of mortgage products, guidelines, and underwriting concepts.
  • Ability to manage multiple loans simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with loan origination systems, CRM tools, and standard office software.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Promptly respond to company-provided mortgage leads generated through marketing campaigns, digital channels, branch centers, and internal referrals.
  • Conduct phone, virtual, and in-branch consultations to educate members on mortgage options.
  • Interview applicants to assess financial needs, goals, and loan eligibility.
  • Analyze income, assets, liabilities, credit, and property information to recommend appropriate loan products.
  • Accurately complete loan applications and issue required disclosures in compliance with timing requirements.
  • Track and document all lead activity, pipeline status, and member interactions in the loan origination system (LOS) and CRM.
  • Develop and maintain external referral relationships including real estate agents, builders, financial professionals, and community partners.
  • Leverage successful closings into repeat business and referral opportunities.
  • Collaborate with branch and retail teams to generate internal referrals and cross-functional support.
  • Participate in business development activities such as Realtor meetings, open houses, homebuyer seminars, community and marketing events.
  • Represent the credit union professionally in the community while adhering to all compliance and branding standards.
  • Obtain, review, and verify all required documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Submit complete and compliant loan files for underwriting approval.
  • Actively manage loan pipeline to meet disclosure, approval, and closing timelines.
  • Coordinate with processors, underwriters, closers, and third-party vendors to ensure timely closings.
  • Proactively communicate loan status updates to members and referral partners.
  • Meet or exceed assigned mortgage production, conversion, and service goals.
  • Deliver a consistent, high-quality member experience from application through closing.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to serve members outside standard business hours when necessary.
  • Support credit union mission, core values, and long-term growth objectives.
  • Comply with all applicable federal and state mortgage lending laws and regulations, including but not limited to: SAFE Act, NMLS requirements, TRID, Fair Lending laws, Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) / USA PATRIOT Act.
  • Maintain active and current NMLS registration and licensing, including continuing education requirements.
  • Complete all required internal, regulatory, and compliance training within assigned timelines.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with credit union bylaws, policies, and internal controls.
  • Responsible for complying with all laws, statutes, rules and regulations which govern credit unions, including but not limited to all components of the Bank Secrecy Act provisions of the US Patriot Act.
