About The Position

The Monitor is an entry-level position responsible for providing security for program premises and ensuring the safety of clients, visitors, and employees. This role involves monitoring the shelter entrance, screening individuals and their belongings, patrolling the premises, and maintaining a safe environment. The Monitor also assists with client support, which may include answering phones, maintaining cleanliness, and potentially assisting with meal preparation or medication monitoring. For those with a driver's license, transportation of participants is also a responsibility. As a non-profit organization, VOALA emphasizes the importance of protecting assets and acting as a role model for participants. All employees are considered Mandated Reporters.

Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance and background check, including criminal history, personal references, and employment/education verifications.
  • Ability to perform under circumstances of possible emotional stress and conflicts dealing with difficult, uncooperative, and potentially aggressive clients.
  • Must successfully complete VOALA safety training within 30 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Current California driver's license and clean driving record
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CA driving laws
  • Database familiarity
  • Clean driving record to be insurable by VOALA insurance
  • Driving ability preferred

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and authorize entrance and departure of individuals to guard against theft and maintain security.
  • Search participants' persons and belongings entering the shelter.
  • Patrol premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and ensure security of doors, windows, and gates.
  • Observe shelter operations to ensure safe conditions, reporting and correcting any hazards.
  • Monitor clients, conduct room checks, and report rule violations to staff.
  • Assist in emergencies, such as fires or the presence of unauthorized persons.
  • Protect shelter assets from theft, loss, or damage.
  • Complete written reports and incident logs of daily activities and irregularities.
  • Act as a role model for participants at all times.
  • Answer telephones and take messages.
  • Maintain office housekeeping and ensure common areas are clean and operational.
  • Assist shelter staff with client services, including meal preparation/serving, medication monitoring, and event setup.
  • Transport individual program participants to various locations (for licensed Monitors).
  • Ensure safety of passengers and operate vehicles in a safe manner (for licensed Monitors).
  • Maintain trip records, mileage, and gasoline usage (for licensed Monitors).
  • Maintain program vehicles in good operating condition.
  • Report any instance of physical or sexual abuse to proper authorities as a Mandated Reporter.
