About The Position

The Monitor Technician is responsible for continuously observing and interpreting EKG/telemetry tracings to detect deviations from a patient's normal baseline. Working closely with nurses and physicians from a distance, this critical role requires interpreting cardiac rhythms and providing prompt alerts in the event of dysrhythmias to safeguard patients in critical or step-down units.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a recognized monitor technician surveillance program/course is required upon hire.
  • 1 year of experience in monitor technician surveillance within the last 5 years is accepted as a substitution for program completion.
  • Candidates without a completed program must finish an approved certificate program within 90 days of hire.
  • All technicians must successfully pass the Sentara Basic Arrhythmia competency tool and exam to be fully released from orientation.

Responsibilities

  • Continuously observe, interpret, and evaluate EKG tracings on telemetry-monitored patients to identify cardiac abnormalities and arrhythmias.
  • Immediately notify appropriate nursing and medical personnel of any dysrhythmias or alarming deviations from a patient's baseline.
  • Accurately document rhythm strips, patient data, and cardiac history into the electronic health record systems.
  • Operate monitoring systems to their full capacity, safely manage telemetry equipment, and troubleshoot hardware/battery issues.
  • Maintain a constant focus on safety by promoting a positive patient experience and strictly adhering to patient privacy and confidentiality standards.
