The Monitor Technician is an unlicensed person who performs indirect care in the department setting and monitors cardiac rhythms via direct cardiac monitors. The role meets the department’s communication needs and transcribes physician orders when CPOE and the EMR clinical documentation system are unavailable. The Monitor Technician verifies that laboratory and radiology tests have been ordered and completed, prepares and compiles records in Med/Surg/Telemetry, orders unit supplies, and prepares and completes each patient’s chart with the necessary daily forms. The Monitor Technician may assist nursing staff with indirect patient-care duties as long as this does not distract from the primary responsibility of dysrhythmia monitoring. Direct patient care under an RN’s direct supervision may be provided within the scope of Certified Nursing Assistant duties only if the employee has an active CNA certification, demonstrates annual competency in CNA duties and skills, and is relieved of Monitor Technician duties while assisting the RN.
