About The Position

The Modeling and Simulation Engineer builds the environments and encounters in which Furientis's missile seeker trains and operates. This includes creating mission-representative terrain, atmospheres, backgrounds, and clutter, as well as target sets, kinematics and behaviors, countermeasure employment, and engagement timelines. The role owns the scenario space and its deliberate coverage so algorithm teams can identify gaps before they become problems. The engineer is responsible for the physics correctness of the simulated world, while rendering at scale is handled by the Seeker Data and Tooling Engineer. The role involves generating thousands of coherent procedural variants for scenario families, designing and maintaining coverage across aspect angles, ranges, conditions, and countermeasures, and defining which real-world conditions should be collected as field data. The engineer delivers versioned, reproducible encounter sets for hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) and evaluation, and provides modeling and simulation sign-off for the worlds produced. This is an on-site role at Furientis's Los Angeles headquarters. Monthly weekend travel is expected for test events and supplier engagements. A security clearance is not required, but candidates must be a U.S. Person and eligible to access export-controlled information. The team is small, highly technical, and broad in scope, with an AI-centric workflow and an expectation that engineers work beyond narrowly defined responsibilities.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience building synthetic environments or scenarios in game, simulation, autonomous vehicle, or defense settings.
  • Hands-on experience with Unreal, Unity, Blender, or an equivalent, including C++ or C# scripting for Unreal or Unity.
  • Fluency in procedural generation, including parameterized worlds, seeded variation, and reproducible builds.
  • Geospatial data experience, including DTED, imagery, and map projections, with careful handling of coordinate systems.
  • Modern Python skills and ability to build reviewable, repeatable pipelines.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and Git version control.
  • Must be a U.S. Person and eligible to access export-controlled information.

Nice To Haves

  • IR scene generation or EO/IR sensor simulation experience.
  • Countermeasure modeling experience.
  • 6-DOF trajectory and kinematics modeling experience.
  • Military operational background or experience in wargaming and scenario design.
  • Hands-on experience with a scene and encounter framework such as DIRSIG or FLITES, or an equivalent.
  • Daily use of agentic coding tools such as Claude Code, with examples of work shipped using them.
  • Rust programming experience.
  • Knowledge of target and threat behaviors sufficient to stage realistic encounters.

Responsibilities

  • Build mission-representative environments, including terrain from real geospatial data, atmospheres, backgrounds, and clutter.
  • Build encounters involving target sets, kinematics and behaviors, countermeasure employment, and engagement timelines.
  • Create procedural systems that generate thousands of coherent variants per scenario family.
  • Own scenario coverage across aspect angles, ranges, conditions, and countermeasures, identifying gaps proactively.
  • Define the field data collection matrix by specifying which real-world conditions should be collected and why.
  • Deliver versioned and reproducible encounter sets for HWIL and evaluation.
  • Ensure the physics correctness of simulated worlds and provide modeling and simulation sign-off.
