About The Position

Precise Systems is seeking a Modeling and Simulation Engineer Associate to provide finite element modeling (FEM) and finite element analysis (FEA) services to customers at NSWC Carderock. This role requires in-person support. The engineer will develop and modify ship, submarine, and component models for structural integrity, structural performance, rough water trials, and underwater explosion (UNDEX) simulation. Work includes preparing full-ship and hybrid models, adapting mesh refinement to specified requirements, adding structural details, and performing quality assurance in accordance with applicable requirements and guidelines. Analysis includes linear and nonlinear methods for evaluating stress, buckling modes, deflections, accelerations, and heat transfer. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in a structural-analysis-related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited institution and at least two years of finite element analysis experience. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance, and U.S. citizenship is required due to customer-related requirements. Precise Systems describes its benefits package as including health insurance, life and accidental death and dismemberment coverage, disability insurance, retirement plans, holiday pay, employee-managed leave, and professional growth opportunities. The annualized salary range is $68,090.08 to $120,135.33. Compensation is determined by factors including education, experience, skills, competencies, and contract-specific requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline related to structural analysis, such as Aerospace, Civil, Naval Architecture, or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, from an ABET-accredited college or university.
  • At least two years of experience with finite element analysis, including advanced skills with FEA software such as FEMAP.
  • Experience creating and modifying 2D shell and 1D beam models in commercial finite element software, especially Femap and/or HyperMesh.
  • Experience with ship structures through drawings or 3D product models, such as NAVISWORKS, to navigate references while verifying or correcting FE models.
  • CAD experience, such as SolidWorks.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required due to the sensitivity of customer-related requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of structures, materials, manufacturing, ocean dynamics, or naval structural design.
  • Familiarity with naval structures, including ships, submarines, and structural components.
  • Two years of experience with linear and nonlinear analysis of beams, shells, and solids.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare full-ship Navy vessel models (LHA-30 and LPD-8) for analysis supporting Rough Water Trials.
  • Use Femap and/or HyperMesh to correct, refine, or un-refine 1D beam and 2D shell meshes based on 3D product models, structural drawings, and inspections.
  • Create hybrid models of BBGN(X) design iterations for UNDEX simulation using 1D beam and rigid, 2D shell, and 0D mass elements.
  • Modify BBGN(X) full-ship models by adding details such as foundations for preliminary design analysis, using 2D shell elements in a Nastran-compatible format.
  • Un-refine a full-ship DDG-51 Flight III model and refine other DDG-51 Flight models to meet DPC 100-11 intermediate mesh requirements for future analysis.
  • Refine full-ship LSD-41 Class models to meet DPC 100-11 intermediate mesh requirements and support compatibility with NLign.
  • Develop, alter, modify, and update finite element models for analysis of the structural integrity, structural performance, and response of ships, submarines, and components.
  • Ensure FEM models follow the specified FEM guidelines and requirements.
  • Ensure FEM models pass required quality assurance measures, which may include peer review, Government review, commercial software routines, analysis, and testing.
  • Perform FEA to assess the structural integrity, structural performance, and UNDEX response of ships, submarines, and components.
  • Perform linear and nonlinear structural analysis to evaluate stress, buckling modes, deflections, accelerations, and heat transfer.
