About The Position

This role involves performing clinical laboratory testing across various departments, ensuring quality control, troubleshooting instruments, and maintaining laboratory procedures in compliance with standards. The position also requires specimen collection, data management, inventory control, and contributing to the training of new staff and students. Maintaining a clean and organized work environment, adhering to hospital policies, and pursuing professional development are also key aspects of this role.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in science (copy of degree or transcript required) and completion of an approved Medical Laboratory Technology internship program.
  • Registration as a Medical Laboratory Technician with the ASCP or NCA.
  • B.S. degree or higher in Medical Lab Science, Medical Technology, Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry (copy of degree or transcript required).
  • One-year internship in ASCP program or other work experience accepted by ASCP, NCA, AACC, or ASM (High school diploma or transcript required).
  • Completion of an approved Medical technology internship program.
  • Registration as a Medical Technologist with the ASCP or NCA.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures the satisfaction of all users of the department's services, both internal and external and seeks to continually improve customer service and satisfaction.
  • Performs clinical testing in conformance with all the Laboratory procedures and physician orders in any of the Laboratory areas assigned; Blood Bank, Serology, Coagulation, Hematology, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Urinalysis, Clinical Microscopy and Microbiology.
  • Maintains proficiency in all areas of Laboratory assigned.
  • Prepares reagents, standards, controls, stains and culture media as necessary.
  • Performs instrument troubleshooting as necessary and preventive maintenance as scheduled.
  • Accurately transcribes completed test data for reporting.
  • Makes recommendations for improvements in quality and/or efficiency to the immediate supervisor.
  • Assists section supervisor, serving as a technical reference in the supervisor's absence and participating in competency assessment.
  • Assists the Section Supervisor in the maintenance of the Quality Control program, including troubleshooting rule failures, verification of QC methods, review of QC data, and collection of statistical data.
  • Participates in test validations, instrument interfaces and other laboratory information systems projects.
  • Assists Section Supervisor in maintaining assigned Procedure Manuals in compliance with CAP and NCCLS standards.
  • Performs functions of the LST job descriptions as needed, including data processing, answering phones, verifying incoming specimens, and preparing specimens for shipment.
  • Practices efficient and economical use of laboratory supplies, checks inventory, orders supplies and restocks upon arrival.
  • Participates in teaching practical and theoretical principles of test procedures to new hires and students.
  • Obtains appropriate blood specimens from patients of all ages.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential.
  • Maintains harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients and guests and serves effectively as part of the Laboratory team.
  • Maintains work benches, testing areas and other work areas in a clean, sanitary and free of clutter condition.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through approved seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations.
  • Learns and performs new procedures established in the clinical laboratory.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Performs other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested.
