About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin’s Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Moon landers and related products. The team is building sustainable infrastructure to transport crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. As a spacecraft development engineer, you will contribute to hardware engineering and mechanical integration for the Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) subsystem and its components. The work includes developing navigation hardware requirements, conducting performance, reliability, and configuration trade studies, creating installation drawings, performing structural analyses for GN&C hardware mounting, and supporting integration, testing, installation, alignment, and verification throughout the program lifecycle. You will coordinate with vehicle systems engineering, mechanical design, structures, thermal, harness, AI&T, and dynamics teams to meet vehicle performance deliverables. Clear technical communication, a commitment to quality, and a passion for safe human spaceflight are required.

Requirements

  • B.S. or M.S. degree and confirmed experience in engineering or a related field; preference for Mechanical, Aerospace, and/or Electrical Engineering.
  • Validated experience with one or more of the following GN&C hardware types: inertial navigation units (gyros and accelerometers), GPS receivers, star-trackers, and/or EO/IR sensors.
  • Experience supporting integration and testing.
  • Operational knowledge of inertial and relative navigation sensors.
  • Demonstrated experience in verification and testing of navigation systems.
  • Proficiency in creating avionics requirements and procurement specifications.
  • Experience with spacecraft avionics communications protocols such as RS-422 or SpaceWire.
  • Experience with Creo Parametric or other CAD tools.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Experience developing spacecraft GN&C systems or spacecraft avionics systems.
  • Subject matter expertise in GD&T and production drawing creation, including CDM requirements for production-release flight hardware drawings.
  • Experience with design configuration control from early trade studies through final design and into manufacturing and test.
  • Experience performing loads and stress analysis for component mounting structures, including point-load modeling and integration of vendor-furnished FEMs.
  • Experience producing standardized structural analysis reports using established tools and standards, including margins of safety and applicable design rules.
  • Experience in sensor procurement.
  • Experience designing, building, testing, or flying space vehicles.
  • Knowledge of planetary spacecraft navigation development.
  • Experience in spaceflight avionics.
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop simulation.
  • Experience with flight testing of spacecraft navigation or avionics.
  • Experience with radiation testing and analysis, including cumulative dose damage and single-event effects.
  • Experience with Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing.
  • Experience with metrology, including position and alignment measurements.
  • Experience with laboratory test equipment such as power supplies, meters, oscilloscopes, and data acquisition equipment.
  • Experience generating interface control drawings (ICDs) and installation drawings.
  • Proven systems engineering and configuration leadership skills.
  • Experience with Windchill and Jama.

Responsibilities

  • Develop GN&C hardware requirements from system-level specifications, flow them down to subsystem and component levels, and define companion verification methods.
  • Support GN&C hardware configuration design through design studies and sensor performance trade studies.
  • Contribute to navigation hardware procurement, vendor coordination, delivery, acceptance, installation, verification, validation, qualification, and certification.
  • Guide and perform testing and analyses, including flight tests, thermal vacuum tests, and vibration tests, to validate system specifications and requirements and establish sensor performance specifications.
  • Support the GN&C hardware test and verification campaign.
  • Support development and execution of component-level navigation test programs, including sensor characterization, sensor modeling, and integrated on-vehicle testing.
  • Support hardware-in-the-loop testing, on-vehicle functional testing, and flight testing.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability.
  • 401(k) with company match of up to 5%.
  • Education Support Program.
  • Stock options for regular employees working at least 20 hours per week.
  • Paid time off of up to four weeks per year, based on weekly scheduled hours.
  • Up to 14 company-paid holidays.
  • Depending on role type and job level, employees may be eligible for benefits and bonuses based on individual contributions and company results.
