About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin’s Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Moon landers and related products. The engineer will join the Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) team and contribute to GN&C models, analysis, and flight code for spacecraft traveling from Earth to the Moon. The work uses software-in-the-loop simulations, hardware-in-the-loop labs, and on-vehicle simulations. The position collaborates with engineers to derive and develop subsystem requirements, conduct analyses and trade studies to validate requirements, and maintain subsystem specifications, budgets, and performance metrics. The engineer is expected to demonstrate best practices, sound technical judgment, and a strong work ethic, while applying technical expertise and leadership to support safe human spaceflight. Passion for Blue Origin’s mission and vision is required.

Requirements

B.S. in aerospace, mechanical, electrical, or systems engineering.
Applied industry experience and/or an M.S. or Ph.D. focused on GN&C.
Experience modeling GN&C components and analyzing GN&C subsystem or component performance through simulation, testing, or analytical methods.
Strong fundamentals in rigid body dynamics, fluid mechanics, and first-principles physics-based mathematical models.
Hands-on experience with testing frameworks and Continuous Integration (CI) pipelines such as GitLab.
Understanding of the relationship between GN&C, vehicle sizing, and vehicle automation.
Knowledge of control, navigation, and astrodynamics fundamentals.
Experience designing and evaluating Monte Carlo simulations, hardware-in-the-loop, and software-in-the-loop testing.
Experience with configuration and product data management.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

MS or higher degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering.
Experience in the full development lifecycle of spacecraft GN&C subsystems.
Strong debugging skills at the software/hardware boundary and familiarity with software verification approaches.
Experience developing software for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.
Experience in C/C++.
Experience auto coding Simulink to C++.
Experience in Rust.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with verification and validation of aerospace simulations and models.
Experience developing and maintaining simulation models, including plant physics, sensors, and actuators.
Experience performing system safety analyses, including Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analyses (FMECA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
Familiarity with DO-178, DO-160, and DO-254 or similar guidelines.

Responsibilities

Develop tools to design, build, deploy, and support simulation infrastructure.
Develop and integrate multidisciplinary models for a multi-vehicle simulation using Simulink and C/C++.
Support the definition, development, and execution of simulations and tools needed to verify subsystem functionality.
Perform analyses and trade studies for the development and verification of subsystem requirements.
Assist in developing GN&C algorithms and flight software.
Support verification and testing to ensure the subsystem complies with its requirements.
Work with engineers across disciplines to assist with and ensure model validation.
Contribute to derivation and development of subsystem requirements and maintain subsystem specifications, budgets, and performance metrics.
