About The Position

Millennium Space Systems, a part of Boeing Defense, Space and Security, is hiring a Mission Operations Engineer at levels 3–4. The engineer serves as the lead technical authority for Millennium’s on-orbit spacecraft and supports the full mission lifecycle, from proposal and mission design through integration, test, launch, on-orbit operations, and decommissioning. The role covers mission concepts and operational requirements, on-orbit procedures, ground-segment design, and development of innovative spacecraft operating methods tailored to each mission. It requires detailed knowledge of spacecraft and ground systems, composure in high-pressure situations, and real-time response to anomalous conditions. The position’s internal job code is Systems Engineer. This position is expected to be 100% onsite at one of the listed location options. It is a first-shift role and may require occasional off-nominal working hours during critical 24/7 mission operations. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance; willingness to apply for TS clearance with SCI eligibility is required. A final U.S. Secret clearance pre-start or an interim and/or final U.S. Secret clearance post-start is specified. The role is subject to the company’s Conflict of Interest assessment process and drug-free workplace testing policies. The position is not contingent upon a program award, is not safety sensitive, and does not offer visa sponsorship. Relocation assistance is not a negotiable benefit. The listed pay ranges are $99,000–$177,000 for Level 3 and $121,000–$215,000 for Level 4. Pay depends on candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. Eligible employees may enroll in benefit programs that generally include health insurance, flexible spending and health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance, and paid and unpaid time away from work; available options vary by eligibility factors.

  • At least 3 years of experience in mission operations or a similar area.
  • Experience with real-time satellite command and control.
  • Willingness to support occasional off-nominal working hours during critical 24/7 mission operations activities.
  • Willingness to apply for a TS clearance with SCI eligibility.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.
  • Must meet U.S. export-control requirements as a U.S. Person.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in aerospace, electrical, software, computer, or mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in mission operations or a similar area.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams, especially in resolving anomalous scenarios.
  • Deep knowledge of satellite systems engineering, including all satellite subsystems.
  • Experience with spacecraft command-and-control software systems.
  • Familiarity with software and scripting tools such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++, and Java.
  • Active TS clearance and SCI eligibility.

Responsibilities

  • Lead spacecraft and subsystem engineers during launch and early-orbit activities to commission spacecraft for service.
  • Serve as lead technical authority for mission operations across space and ground segments.
  • Support the mission lifecycle, including proposal and mission modeling, design, integration and test, shipment, launch, on-orbit operations, and decommissioning.
  • Define ground and mission operations requirements and flow mission requirements to the spacecraft team.
  • Define mission concepts of operation and design reference missions.
  • Catalog lessons learned from on-orbit exercises to improve future vehicle designs.

  • Implement and test spacecraft fault and autonomy capabilities, including fault detection and response, autonomous behavior, and onboard command and control.
  • Develop and implement operational automation to reduce routine operator responsibilities.
  • Create and execute spacecraft simulator tests to validate mission, fault, and autonomy designs.
  • Create and execute in-factory flight-vehicle tests to validate mission-design compatibility with flight hardware.
  • Conduct ground-segment testing, including radio-frequency compatibility, remote-ground-facility interface, and critical-ground-asset acceptance testing.
  • Form and lead anomaly-response teams when off-nominal spacecraft conditions arise.
  • Contribute to customer briefings and debriefings for orbital events.
  • Design and validate the mission sequence of events for bus commissioning, payload checkout and calibration, and mission operations.
  • Contribute to mission rehearsals to train the mission team and validate mission design.

Benefits
