Mission Autonomy Software Developer
About The Position
Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems – Research & Advanced Design is hiring a Software Engineer or Principal Software Engineer for its Advanced Autonomy Team in El Segundo, California. The role supports the team’s mission autonomy software group, working with unmanned autonomous aircraft platforms and their support systems. The position develops C++ mission autonomy software and infrastructure that interacts directly with an autonomous flight testbed, may onboard external partners’ autonomy code, and deploys software using containerization technologies. The role works with Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Cloud & Application, and DevOps teams in an Agile development environment. The position is onsite, with travel up to 10% of the time. Relocation assistance may be available. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government clearance and Special Access Program access within a reasonable period as determined by business needs.
Requirements
- For Software Engineer: Bachelor of Science in a STEM discipline and 2 years of engineering-related experience, or a STEM master’s degree and 0 years of related engineering experience.
- For Principal Software Engineer: Bachelor of Science in a STEM discipline and 5 years of engineering-related experience, or a STEM master’s degree and 3 years of related engineering experience.
- Experience with Python, C++, and Linux-based development environments.
- Experience with object-oriented programming concepts and test-driven development practices.
- Experience with Agile best practices and processes.
- Knowledge of software engineering practices and patterns across the full software, hardware, and network development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, and testing.
- Experience implementing containerized software using open standards such as OCI (Open Container Initiative).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government clearance and Special Access Program access within a reasonable amount of time, as determined by business needs.
Nice To Haves
- Experience implementing onboard mission system software.
- Experience developing mission autonomy software for tasking, routing, or other behaviors.
- Experience with Government Reference Architectures such as OMS/UCI and A-GRA.
- Knowledge of or experience with software infrastructure as code for technologies such as Kubernetes/K3s, Podman/Docker, and Helm.
- Experience with operating system fundamentals such as memory management, scheduling, and concurrency.
Responsibilities
- Develop mission autonomy software and infrastructure in C++ for unmanned autonomous aircraft platforms and support systems.
- Build software that interacts directly with the autonomous flight testbed.
- Work with external partners to onboard their autonomy code into Northrop Grumman systems, as needed.
- Deploy software using containerization and related technologies.
- Collaborate with Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Cloud & Application, and DevOps teams in an Agile development environment.
