About The Position

Velos is seeking a Missile Systems Engineer Level IV to support an engineering and technical services contract at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) facility in Washington, DC. This is a full-time position requiring a Top Secret clearance and U.S. citizenship. The engineer will lead design, development, and analysis of advanced missile and hypersonic systems. The work includes detailed hypersonic systems analysis, modeling and simulation, ground and flight testing, configuration trade studies, prototype hardware development, and definition and verification of program requirements. The engineer will coordinate with aerodynamicists and Intelligence Community experts, monitor technical performance metrics, and communicate findings through presentations and documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or another related engineering field.
  • An additional 15 years of experience in aerospace engineering with a background in missile systems and hypersonic systems.
  • Top Secret clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard modeling and simulation tools such as MATLAB, ANSYS, NASTRAN, and trajectory simulation software such as OTIS or POST.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with NAVAIR (NAWCWD, PMA-242, or PMA-259) or NAVSEA (PEO IWS).

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and analysis of advanced missile and hypersonic systems.
  • Analyze hypersonic systems, including aerodynamics, aerothermal effects, materials, and structural loads.
  • Develop and use high-fidelity models and simulations to predict and evaluate system performance.
  • Plan, execute, and analyze ground and flight tests to verify and validate system performance.
  • Conduct configuration trade studies to identify configurations that best meet individual subsystem requirements, including propulsion, RF, attitude control, power, and payload.
  • Design, develop, and test prototype missile and hypersonic hardware.
  • Define program-level requirements and verify that program requirements are completed.
  • Derive Technical Performance Metrics, including budgets and KPPs, to specify and monitor missile or hypersonic vehicle development, including airworthiness, navigation, control, and stability metrics.
  • Work with aerodynamicists to specify design reference missions used to evaluate hypersonic vehicle performance and guide its design.
  • Work with Intelligence Community experts to assess missile or hypersonic system capabilities relative to adversary capabilities and adjust requirements as needed to assure overmatch.
  • Present work effectively to managers and sponsors and prepare clear, thorough documentation.
