About The Position

The Mine Engineer Intern supports continuous improvement and capital project activities across U.S. Aggregates' 27 Indiana plant locations, contributing analytical and technical skills to real-world operations challenges. Working alongside operations, safety, sales, quality, and engineering teams, this intern gains broad exposure to aggregate production environments while completing a defined summer project designed to drive measurable operational efficiency improvements. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, analytically minded, and eager to apply engineering fundamentals in a hands-on industrial setting. This position will be primarily located out of our U.S. Aggregates corporate office in Indianapolis, IN, with frequent travel to plant sites across Indiana. The schedule for this internship position is full-time, aligned with the summer term; occasional extended hours may be required to meet project milestones.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Mining Engineering required
  • Working knowledge of engineering principles with the ability to apply technical concepts to operational analysis, process improvement, and capital project support in an aggregate production environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel (data analysis, pivot tables) and PowerPoint
  • working knowledge of AutoCAD or similar technical drafting or design software to support project documentation and analysis
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings clearly and professionally to both operational teams and senior leadership
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to analyze operational data, identify root causes, and develop practical, data-driven recommendations
  • Self-motivated and organized, with strong time management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities independently in a dynamic, multi-site field environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively across cross-functional teams and to adapt effectively in a hands-on industrial environment
  • Work involves both desk-based analytical work and active site walkthroughs requiring sustained walking, standing, crouching, and kneeling
  • Must be able to lift, carry, or move materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • All site work is performed in compliance with U.S. Aggregates safety standards; appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times on-site

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes daily operational procedures, performance metrics, and production trends across U.S. Aggregates plant sites to identify efficiency improvement opportunities and develop data-driven recommendations
  • Supports incident investigations by contributing to root cause analysis, coordinating the execution of corrective action items, and tracking continuous improvement activities to reduce recurrence
  • Collaborates with Plant Managers and the Quality Manager to review operating procedures, collect and analyze production data, and contribute to strategies that optimize aggregate production performance
  • Designs and delivers a defined summer project — including a final presentation to U.S. Aggregates leadership — with clear objectives, documented findings, and measurable outcome recommendations
  • Prepares project justifications and supporting documentation that communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly to operational and engineering stakeholders
  • Applies technical and analytical skills across operations, safety, quality, sales, and engineering functions, building a comprehensive foundation in aggregate production and mine engineering
