About The Position

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Millwright Mechanic for the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) Maintenance team. The position focuses on the precision installation, alignment, and maintenance of rotating equipment and mechanical systems across the ATR Complex. The work supports nuclear energy research, national security, and clean power research at the Advanced Test Reactor.

The role is based at the ATR facility and follows a 4x10 schedule, with Fridays off. This is a testing-designated position requiring a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing. The position requires ongoing training, qualifications, and certifications, including Radiological Worker II, respirator qualification, and Overhead Crane Inspector qualification. The employee must complete the ATR Mechanic Qualification Card and obtain a DOE “L” security clearance within one year of hire; the clearance requires U.S. citizenship. Radiological Worker Qualification must be obtained within 45 days of hire.

Work takes place in offices, buildings, and field environments. Field work may involve adverse weather, radiation work, hazardous chemicals or waste, noise, extreme temperatures, UV exposure, ladders, confined spaces, power tools, mechanical and electrical hazards, moving vehicles, and heavy equipment. Protective clothing and a respirator are required as needed. The position involves irregular hours and overtime, shifts longer than eight hours, and working alone.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED plus 5 years of applicable industrial mechanical systems experience emphasizing rotating equipment and millwright work; or 2-year vocational/technical training plus 3 years of experience; or recognized trade apprenticeship completion plus 2 years of applicable experience.
• Proficiency with precision instruments, including micrometers, calipers, laser alignment tools, and dial indicators.
• Familiarity with vibration analysis and predictive maintenance techniques.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and OEM manuals.
• Working knowledge of lockout/tagout (LOTO), personal protective equipment (PPE), confined-space entry, and industrial safety standards.
• Ability to obtain Radiological Worker Qualification within 45 days of hire.
• Valid state driver’s license.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE “L” security clearance within one year of hire; U.S. citizenship is required for the clearance.
• Obtain and maintain Radiological Worker II (Rad Worker 2) qualification for work in radiological areas.
• Obtain and maintain respirator qualification for work in areas with potential airborne hazards.
• Obtain and maintain Overhead Crane Inspector qualification for inspection and oversight of crane operations.
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including occasionally lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

• 5 or more years of journeyman-level millwright experience in an industrial or commercial setting.
• Experience in nuclear, government, or other highly regulated industrial environments.

Responsibilities

• Install, align, and maintain centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, motors, gearboxes, couplings, and shafts.
• Perform precision shaft and laser alignment of rotating machinery.
• Use micrometers, dial indicators, feeler gauges, and calibrated torque tools.
• Use vibration analysis equipment to evaluate rotating equipment condition.
• Dismantle and reassemble complex mechanical components, including gearboxes, couplings, and shafts.
• Remove, inspect, and install sleeve, roller, ball, thrust, and journal bearings.
• Replace mechanical, O-ring, and lip seals, and replace pump packing.
• Lubricate equipment, collect oil samples, and perform vibration monitoring.
• Balance fans and perform predictive maintenance on rotating equipment.
• Maintain hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
• Interpret OEM manuals, schematics, and technical documentation.
• Participate in work planning, material procurement, and man-hour estimating.
• Mentor and provide on-the-job training to less experienced craftsmen.
• Participate in company safety programs, including VPP, ALARA, and EST.
• Complete the ATR Mechanic Qualification Card and other required training.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.
