About The Position

The position of Mill Floor Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of machinery within the Flat Products Hot Mill. This includes performing daily inspections, quality checks, and operating various equipment to ensure productivity and maintain high standards. The role requires a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with potential for advancement into leadership roles.

Requirements

  • Minimum of High School Degree or Equivalent (GED).
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to learn, adapt, and retain information.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Mobility in plant.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk.
  • Ability to use hands for technical tasks.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
  • Follow Company safety rules.
  • Report the absence of or defect in any protective equipment or clothing.
  • Use required personal protective equipment (Safety shoes, Safety glasses, Hearing protection, Hard Hat).
  • Additional PPE may be required (Respirators, Fire Retardant clothing, Acid PPE).
  • Report contraventions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations or Company policy.
  • Follow all Lock out Tag out (LOTO) guidelines.
  • Follow all Environmental Policies and Regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.

Responsibilities

  • Working safely and ensuring the safety of others.
  • Performing inspections and daily checks of machinery including Furnace Discharge, Hot Scale Breaker, Roughing Mill, Crop Shear, Finishing Mill, Downcoiler, and Plate Line.
  • Recording equipment readings and monitoring auxiliary equipment such as hydraulic and lubrication systems.
  • Conducting quality inspections of hot strip, including visual inspection for defects and dimensional checks.
  • Operating mobile equipment such as overhead cranes and fork trucks.
  • Completing check lists for Roughing Mill, Finishing Mill, and Downcoiler at minimum once per shift.
  • Completing hydraulic and lubrication check lists a minimum of twice per shift.
  • Performing visual scale pit pump checks.
  • Performing down coiler pinch roll inspection/grinding.
  • Changing roughing mill work rolls, back-up rolls, wipers, roll cooling nozzles, and descaling nozzles.
  • Changing finishing mill work rolls, back-up rolls, wipers, roll cooling nozzles, and furnace coiler site glasses.
  • Operating torches (oxy-acetylene and plasma) for scrap cutting and handling.
  • Performing checks and maintenance on the automatic banding machine and coil marking machine.
  • Performing strip inspection and dimensional checks.
  • Operating overhead crane and fork truck for various functions including moving product, dumping crop buckets, rejecting slabs, and loading/unloading materials.
  • Performing daily crane inspections.
  • Taking inventory of plate, scrap, and spare parts.
  • Properly identifying coils and plates.
  • Assisting Furnace Entry with Slab Receiving and Campaign marking.
  • Maintaining good housekeeping.
  • Following all work instructions, guidelines, and safety rules.
  • Scrap cutting and handling.
  • Changing automatic bander material.
  • Performing checks on the coil marking machine.
  • Dumping crop buckets.
  • Cleaning out scale pits.
  • Cleaning cameras.
  • Rejecting slabs.
  • Assisting operators with cobble clean up.
  • Loading/unloading operational material.
  • Participating in continuous improvement programs.
