About The Position

Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School (BUGS) is seeking passionate educators for the 2026-2027 school year to join their progressive Middle School in South Slope/Windsor Terrace. BUGS serves approximately 300 students of all abilities and backgrounds, focusing on sustainability education, diverse-by-design principles, and community-based learning. The school offers a hands-on, interdisciplinary education with an emphasis on real-world problem-solving and environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Requirements

  • Have a passion for teaching and developing within their content area.
  • Possess a commitment to collaboration, co-teaching, educating for sustainability, and ongoing professional growth.
  • Have experience teaching within an ICT setting, utilizing a variety of co-teaching models.
  • Can show evidence of differentiation in their lesson plans.
  • Have experience working with IEPs.
  • Utilize and/or are familiar with Standards Based Grading and Reporting.
  • Desire to work in a heterogeneous classroom with a range of ability levels and students of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Have experience working with middle school/young adolescents.
  • Have a valid New York State Teaching Certification or valid New York State Students With Disabilities Certification.
  • Have three years of teaching experience; highly preferred.
  • Have a Bachelor's degree, required.
  • Have a Master's degree, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Share the workload as co-teachers, with both teachers expected to serve all students fully, even if one is a certified special education teacher.
  • Utilize a variety of strategies to reach all students, including differentiated instruction, modifications, and accommodations such as small groups, graphic organizers, leveled texts, strong vocabulary support, adapted or leveled texts, and multiple access points to content, rooted in a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach.
  • Leverage co-teaching models by reviewing units/lessons and determining the best-suited models, prioritizing parallel, station, alternative, and team teaching.
  • Conduct routine progress monitoring, with teachers, co-teaching teams, grade teams, and departments analyzing data to support instructional decisions.
  • Know which students have mandated support, including the specific needs of students with IEPs, 504s, and ELL designations, and plan to meet these needs throughout the school day, supported by the Director of Inclusion and Assessment.
  • Regularly assess students and use data to inform instruction.
  • Create and design coursework in the context of an interdisciplinary sustainability-focused hands-on learning and real-world problem-solving curriculum.
  • Commit to school-wide behavior systems that consider adolescent development and promote holistic, socio-emotional responses through restorative justice and collaborative problem-solving in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs.
  • Communicate and collaborate regularly with families, colleagues, and students.
  • Exemplify the BUGS Mission, Vision, and C.A.R.E.S. Values.
  • Actively develop their professional practice using the BUGS Teacher Professional Practice Commitments as a framework.
  • Research and implement culturally responsive classroom practices by participating in a Professional Learning Community throughout the school year to identify best practices that would be embedded into the classrooms and curricula.
  • Plan thoughtfully to connect Educating for Sustainability standards, C.A.R.E.S. values, and Project Based Learning into their daily planning and execution of lessons, exploring different ways to make content accessible and relevant to students.
  • Participate in monthly Field Study Trips, which are part of the educating for sustainability standards, field research, and community action projects.
  • Attend at least five evenings throughout the year as needed, including Curriculum Night (September), Family & Teacher Conferences (November), Student-led Subject Area Conferences (March), and other BUGS sponsored events and conferences.
