About The Position

Meskwaki Settlement School is seeking a dedicated Middle School Science Teacher for grades 6-8. This role involves planning and organizing learning activities, considering individual student needs and cultural backgrounds, and adopting appropriate teaching strategies. The teacher will maintain classroom order and discipline in accordance with school policy, foster a positive and secure learning environment, and believe in the potential of all students to learn. Responsibilities include preparing daily and yearly plans, developing and maintaining program charts and student records, and displaying a schedule of activities. Evaluation of student progress and adaptation of instructional methods are key. The teacher will maintain student records, including daily attendance, and cooperate with colleagues and administration on program development and teaching activities. Initiating motivation and a positive atmosphere for learning, reporting student progress to parents/guardians, and administering discipline according to Board Policy are also required. Attendance at staff meetings, carrying out assigned supervisory responsibilities, and creating/assisting with extracurricular and cultural activities are expected. Serving on the curriculum committee to develop a beneficial curriculum for the school, focusing on intellectual, cultural, physical, social, and emotional development, is part of the role. The teacher will provide daily supervision and guidance to teacher associates, monitor student behavior, and take necessary training such as First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, and CPR. The position reports directly to the Principal and requires adherence to the teacher's Code of Ethics, along with other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Must possess a Bachelor's Degree and Certification required by the Bureau of Indian Education and the State of Iowa.
  • Must pass a background check per Public Law 101-630, Public Law 101-647, and the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and organize the learning activities of the class with due regard to the individual differences and needs of the students.
  • Consider the individuality and culture of each student, and adopt teaching strategies suited to each child's educational needs.
  • Maintain, in cooperation with the Principal and colleagues, good order and discipline in the classroom and school premises, consistent with the Meskwaki Settlement School Disciplinary Policy.
  • Ensure a positive and secure school climate to enhance overall learning and student achievement.
  • Nurture the conviction that all students can learn.
  • Prepare daily and yearly plans for all curricular activities of the class.
  • Develop and maintain a daily program chart and record of students as it pertains to other classroom programs (i.e. Chapter 1, Special Education, Gifted and Talented, etc.)
  • Prepare and display a schedule of all curricular activities of the class.
  • Evaluate each child's progress and plan instructional methods accordingly.
  • Maintain and keep all necessary records for each student.
  • Keep records of attendance of students to be reported daily.
  • Cooperate with colleagues and administration, in program development and teaching activities.
  • Initiate motivation and a positive atmosphere for the utmost learning of each student.
  • Report regularly to the parent/guardian in regard to their child's progress.
  • Administer discipline in accordance with the Board Policy of the Meskwaki Settlement School.
  • Attend regularly all meetings of the staff convened by the Principal.
  • Carry out supervising responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
  • Create and assist with extracurricular activities.
  • Create and assist with Cultural activities.
  • Serve on the curriculum committee to help achieve a curriculum that is beneficial to the Meskwaki Settlement School.
  • Provide daily supervision, guidance, and work as a team with teacher associates.
  • Monitor student behavior and initiate corrective action as required.
  • Take training in programs that are necessary for the well-being of each child (i.e. First Aide, Blood born pathogens, CPR)
  • Follow the teacher's Code of Ethics.
  • Other duties as assigned.
