About The Position

The Middle School Principal, serving grades 5-8, is responsible for the overall operation of the school facility and program. This role involves the supervision of all assigned staff and personnel, ensuring the well-being and services for all students, and maintaining the school facility. The principal is expected to promote the school through public relations, demonstrate strong administrative and decision-making abilities, and maintain communication with the District Office and Board of Education. This position requires adherence to and enforcement of all district policies and procedures, leadership in health, safety, and welfare, and responsibility for student support areas such as food service, transportation, and special needs. The principal must also delegate authority effectively for smooth school operation in their absence.

Requirements

  • A Master’s Degree, with concentration in educational administration.
  • A valid Ohio certificate/license for grades 5-8.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the administrative and instructional leader of the building(s) assigned.
  • Responsible for overall operation of the school facility and program.
  • Responsible for supervision of all staff and personnel assigned to the building.
  • Responsible for all students assigned to the building and the corresponding student services.
  • Responsible for the maintenance, care and operation of the building.
  • Responsible for promoting the school through an on-going public relations program.
  • Demonstrates leadership for the building through his/her administrative and decision making abilities.
  • Maintains on-going communications with the District Office regarding school matters.
  • Files monthly reports to the Board of Education and attends Board of Education meetings as requested.
  • Prepares and/or presents reports or material as requested by the District Office, Board of Education, Educational Service Center, or the State Department of Education.
  • Abides by all district policies, procedures and regulations, and enforces them with students and staff.
  • Assumes leadership in providing for the health, safety and welfare of students and staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for student support areas including food service, transportation and special needs.
  • Delegates authority to responsible personnel to assure effective school operation in the absence of the principal.
  • Coordinates the recruiting and interviewing of staff and makes recommendations for employment.
  • Makes recommendations to the District Office regarding the contractual status of personnel under his/her direct supervision.
  • Conducts orientation for new staff members.
  • Conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Prepares periodic staff bulletins.
  • Annually prepares staff bulletins.
  • Supervises scheduling of substitute teachers as needed.
  • Assumes a leadership role for the overall morale of the staff.
  • Involves the teaching staff in the decision making process when appropriate.
  • Maintains appropriate personnel files for individuals assigned to the building.
  • Supervises the scheduling of students and staff.
  • Plans and supervises programs and drills for emergency preparedness and safety.
  • Supervises the evaluation of personnel as appropriate.
  • Supervises the work of instructional leaders (in cooperation with the Educational Service Center Curriculum Coordinator and head teachers, if assigned).
  • Makes teacher contract recommendations to Superintendent.
  • Participates in the development of staff development activities for the teaching staff.
  • Serves as the instructional leader for students and staff in the building.
  • Participates in the overall curriculum planning process for grades 5-8.
  • Provides information to staff and community about the learning outcomes and needs of students.
  • Works with the Fairfield County Curriculum Coordinator and Superintendent in the identification of instructional needs and instructional goals for the building, based upon the assessment information of students, as well as other information.
  • Provides an effective system of scheduling for all students.
  • Supervises a system for the proper maintenance of all student records.
  • Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline according to board policy.
  • Responsible for coordination and supervision of athletic and after-school activities.
  • Attends appropriate student activities to provide leadership and demonstrate interest in the activities.
  • Annually prepares a student handbook and insures its distribution to individual students and parents.
  • Develops incentives to encourage high levels of student academic performance and behavior.
  • Encourages students to develop responsibility for their own actions and conduct.
  • Available to students to discuss problems, concerns and reasonable requests.
  • Fosters respect and a positive self-image among students.
  • Recognizes and appropriately commends student accomplishments.
  • Encourages students to understand that the image of their school is important and that the image of the school has direct bearing on the community.
  • Encourages and/or plans student programs/assemblies that will be both educational and entertaining to students.
  • Responsible for the proper maintenance and cleaning of the building in conjunction with the maintenance and custodial supervisors and staff.
  • Works with the District Office and staff in obtaining necessary equipment for the building.
  • Is responsible for proper maintenance and repair of educational equipment.
  • Works cooperatively with the District Office in planning of new or renovation of existing facilities to meet the needs of the educational program.
  • Issues and assumes responsibility for the control of all keys.
  • Is responsible for insuring proper security of the building.
  • Is responsible for establishing a procedure for the use of school facilities by community groups.
  • Directly supervises the building custodians and assumes responsibility for the general custodial care of the building.
  • Insures that the facility meets all safety and fire codes.
  • Promotes among the staff and students pride in the facility and encourages them to assist on an on-going basis in the care of it.
  • Demonstrates leadership in the promotion of the school in the community.
  • Prepares news releases to the media for informational items.
  • Recognizes student and staff achievements through appropriate media releases.
  • Publishes a building newsletter to building parents as prescribed in Board of Education policy and procedures.
  • Encourages teachers to provide positive feedback to parents.
  • Promotes parent conference days and school visitation days.
  • Assumes leadership to develop appropriate programs to foster a positive relationship between the school and the community.
  • Communicates and interprets school policy and administrative decisions to staff.
  • Encourages conferences between parents and teachers and assists in scheduling such conferences.
  • Cooperates with the administrative team members on common concerns.
  • Promotes and works with parent groups including booster groups, advisory council, etc.
  • Works with the Superintendent and Treasurer in the preparation of building budgets.
  • Provides a system for the requisitioning of purchases in conjunction with the treasurer’s office.
  • Promotes an attitude that is consistent with the resources of the district and the needs of the educational programs.
  • Involves the teaching staff in financial decision making when appropriate.
  • Supervises the inventory control of all equipment and materials purchased.
