About The Position

St. Paul Academy and Summit School (SPA) is seeking candidates for the position of Middle School Math Teacher- Long Term Substitute. SPA is a coeducational, non-sectarian, college-preparatory day school serving over 920 students in Prekindergarten through grade 12 across three campuses in St. Paul, Minnesota. The school's mission is to shape the minds and hearts of the people who will change the world, emphasizing the unique potential in every child. The Middle School, serving grades 6-8, focuses on a warm and welcoming community, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and an innovative and rigorous curriculum. The curriculum encourages exploration and skill development, with an emphasis on organization, accountability, independent thinking, and social/emotional support through Developmental Designs for Middle School and an advisory system. This is a one-year, full-time appointment for a teacher knowledgeable and experienced in mathematics, capable of teaching foundational math content areas including pre-algebra, geometry, and Algebra I. The ability to teach through Geometry is preferred. Experience with Singapore math methods and standards-based assessments is also preferred. Demonstrated experience working with adolescents is essential. A typical full-time Middle School teaching position includes four classes and an advisory, with class sizes capped at 16.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in math, math education, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated passion for mathematics and a track record leveraging this passion into effective practices that encourage students to think creatively, engage with ideas deeply, and lead with intellectual curiosity.
  • Commitment to developing and practicing cultural competence in teaching.
  • Ability to operate effectively in diverse environments.
  • Ability to interact successfully with people from widely varying backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience working with adolescents.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to teach through Geometry.
  • Training or experience with Singapore math methods and standards-based assessments.
  • Training and experience in Developmental Designs for Middle School (training will be provided before the year begins).
  • A Master's degree.

Responsibilities

  • Teach students across all foundational math content areas, including pre-algebra, geometry, and Algebra I.
  • Create developmentally appropriate curricula.
  • Establish a supportive and engaging classroom environment for students.
  • Differentiate instruction and materials to meet the needs of all students.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and parents/guardians.
  • Advise students effectively and contribute to the life of the school outside the classroom.
