About The Position

The purpose of this role is to plan, organize, and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development. This includes managing instructional time, student behavior, instructional presentation, monitoring student performance, providing feedback, facilitating instruction, and interacting effectively within the educational environment. The teacher will also perform non-instructional duties as assigned and adhere to established laws, policies, rules, and regulations, while developing a plan for professional development and demonstrating growth.

Requirements

  • Degree in education or in a related area that will qualify for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

  • Physical requirements are consistent with Light Work due to the amount of time spent standing and/or walking.

  • Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, including receiving instructions, assignments, and/or directions from superiors.

  • Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages.
  • Numerical Aptitude: Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; and apply principles of descriptive statistics, statistical inference, and statistical theory.
  • Form/Spatial Aptitude: Ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
  • Motor Coordination: Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle various items such as office equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Color Discrimination: Ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
  • Interpersonal Temperament: Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergencies.
  • Physical Communication: Ability to talk and hear. Must be able to communicate via email and telephone.

Responsibilities

  • Manage instructional time by having materials ready, creating lessons based on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS), getting the class started quickly, getting students on task quickly, and maintaining a high level of student time-on-task.
  • Manage student behavior by establishing rules and procedures for routine matters, student participation, and movement in the classroom; frequently monitoring student behavior and stopping inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining student dignity.
  • Present instruction by reviewing previous materials, introducing new lessons and objectives, speaking fluently and precisely, using understandable concepts and language, providing relevant examples and demonstrations, assigning tasks with a high rate of success, asking appropriate questions, conducting lessons at a brisk pace while adjusting for understanding, making efficient transitions, clarifying assignments, and summarizing main points.
  • Monitor student performance by maintaining clear, firm, and reasonable work standards and due dates, circulating to check student performance during class work, routinely using work products to check progress, and posing questions clearly and one at a time.
  • Provide feedback on in-class work to encourage student growth, regularly provide prompt feedback on out-of-class work, affirm correct responses, and provide sustaining feedback after incorrect responses or no response.
  • Facilitate instruction by having an instructional plan compatible with school and system-wide curricular goals, using data-informed practices and diagnostic information to develop and revise objectives/tasks, maintaining accurate records of student performance, aligning objectives, learning strategies, assessment, and student needs, and using available resources to support the instructional program.
  • Interact effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and the community, treating all students fairly and equitably.
  • Perform non-instructional duties as assigned, adhere to laws, policies, rules, and regulations, and develop and follow a plan for professional development.
  • Coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
  • Carry out other related work as required.
