About The Position

The purpose of this role is to plan, organize, and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development. This position involves managing instructional time, student behavior, instructional presentation, monitoring student performance, providing feedback, facilitating instruction, interacting within the educational environment, and performing non-instructional duties.

Requirements

  • Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
  • Ability to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs.
  • Ability to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people or things.
  • Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, including receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors.
  • Ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc.
  • Ability to prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, instructional materials, etc., using a prescribed format.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical, legal and counseling terminology.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; and to apply the principles of descriptive statistics, statistical inference and statistical theory.

Responsibilities

  • Manage instructional time by having materials ready, starting lessons quickly, and maintaining a high level of student time-on-task.
  • Manage student behavior by establishing clear rules and procedures for routines, participation, and movement, and by promptly and consistently addressing inappropriate behavior.
  • Present instruction by reviewing previous material, introducing new lessons with clear objectives, speaking fluently and precisely, using understandable language and relevant examples, assigning tasks with a high success rate, asking appropriate questions, maintaining a brisk pace, making smooth transitions, clarifying assignments, and summarizing main points.
  • Monitor student performance by maintaining clear work standards, circulating to check work, using various assessments to track progress, and posing questions clearly.
  • Provide feedback on student work to encourage growth, offering prompt feedback on assigned work and sustaining feedback after incorrect responses by probing or providing clues.
  • Facilitate instruction by aligning plans with curricular goals, using diagnostic information to revise objectives, maintaining accurate records, matching objectives with strategies and student needs, and utilizing available resources.
  • Interact effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and the community in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Perform non-instructional duties as assigned, adhere to established laws and policies, and engage in professional development.
  • Coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
  • Constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, especially during inclusive activities.
