The Middle School Assistant Principal assists the principal in administering and supervising the total middle school program, providing instructional leadership, supporting staff and student development, and ensuring a safe, inclusive, and effective learning environment. The Middle School Assistant Principal supports the principal in administering the instructional programs for the school and is a member of the team responsible for providing instructional leadership. The work involves responsibilities, as assigned, for developing and implementing a sound instructional program, supervising, and evaluating the performance of staff members, maintaining the school plant facility, and serving as a liaison between the school and the community. The purpose of the work is to promote continuous improvement and student achievement by ensuring high-quality educational programs, effective school management, and a positive, collaborative school culture. Requirements

  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of modern public middle school education principles, practices, and current trends, and applies them effectively to meet the needs of the school community.
  • Possesses knowledge of curriculum design, instructional strategies, assessment methods, and school improvement planning processes.
  • Understands school administrative practices, student services operations, and overall school management functions.
  • Plans, organizes, and coordinates programs, activities, and personnel efficiently to support instructional and operational goals.
  • Exhibits strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to inspire and guide staff and students toward continuous improvement.
  • Builds and sustains positive relationships with students, families, staff, and community partners to promote collaboration and engagement.
  • Analyzes problems, identifies solutions, and makes sound decisions using effective judgment and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Models professionalism, ethical behavior, integrity, and cultural competence in all interactions and decisions.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences.
  • Master’s degree in education, school administration or educational leadership.
  • A minimum of (four) 4 years of experience in teaching, preferably at the high school level.
  • Demonstrated experience in educational leadership, supervision, or administrative capacity.
  • Postgraduate Professional License with endorsement(s) designated as appropriate to the assignment.
  • Must have or be eligible for licensure in the state of Virginia.
  • Administrative and supervision PreK-12 endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the administration and supervision of the total middle school program, including academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities.
  • Provides instructional leadership to ensure high-quality teaching and learning aligned with Arlington Public Schools’ mission, goals, and Virginia Standards of Learning.
  • Supervises and evaluates instructional and support personnel, providing feedback and professional development opportunities to enhance staff performance and instructional effectiveness.
  • Upholds effective student discipline and promotes a safe, inclusive, and supportive school climate conducive to learning.
  • Monitors student attendance, grading, counseling, and pupil services programs to ensure equitable access and consistent implementation.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of school improvement and instructional programs.
  • Coordinate operational and support service activities, including transportation, safety, facility maintenance, field trips, and community use of the building.
  • Oversees compliance with emergency procedures, safety drills, and established security protocols to ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors.
  • Assists in managing budget and fiscal procedures; prepares reports, forms, surveys, and maintains accurate records and inventories.
  • Serves as liaison between the school, families, and community organizations to foster effective communication, engagement, and support for student success.
  • Participates in staff selection, induction, supervision, and retention processes; makes recommendations regarding hiring, reassignment, and termination of personnel.
  • Plans, supervises, and participates in school events, assemblies, professional development activities, and orientation programs for students, staff, and parents.
  • Assists in the supervision of custodial and security staff to promote a clean, safe, and orderly learning environment.
  • Develops and supervises assigned instructional programs or curriculum areas to ensure alignment with division standards and goals.
  • Attends professional meetings, workshops, and conferences to maintain knowledge of current educational practices and trends.
  • Serves as the acting administrator in the principal’s absence.
  • Performs other administrative, instructional, and operational duties as assigned to support school leadership, staff development, and student achievement.
