Mid-Level Hydrogeologist

GSI Environmental Inc.•Missoula, MT

About The Position

GSI Environmental is seeking a Mid-Level Hydrogeologist / Groundwater Modeler to join its growing mining team. The role applies hydrogeologic fundamentals, numerical modeling, and data analysis to complex mine-water problems, working with hydrogeologists, engineers, geochemists, and permitting specialists on projects in the U.S. and internationally. The position has a strong groundwater-modeling focus. The successful candidate will develop conceptual hydrogeologic models; build, calibrate, and apply numerical groundwater-flow and contaminant-transport models; evaluate mine dewatering, seepage, groundwater impacts, and closure conditions; and communicate results through technical reports and presentations. The role also supports field programs, multidisciplinary project work, and project-management activities. The position is based in Missoula, Montana, with a flexible work environment and potential for remote work.

Requirements

  • B.S. or higher in hydrogeology, geology, hydrology, civil/environmental engineering, water resources, or a related field.
  • Approximately 4 to 10 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience developing or supporting numerical groundwater models using MODFLOW, MODFLOW-USG, MODFLOW 6, Groundwater Vistas, or similar tools.
  • Strong understanding of groundwater-flow principles, hydrostratigraphy, conceptual site models, model calibration, sensitivity analysis, and water budgets.
  • Experience analyzing hydrogeologic datasets and preparing technically defensible reports, figures, and presentations.
  • Strong data-management skills and proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • GIS experience.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel domestically for fieldwork and project meetings.

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. degree.
  • Relevant experience in environmental consulting, mining hydrogeology, or groundwater modeling.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and refine conceptual hydrogeologic models using geologic, hydraulic, groundwater-level, pumping, recharge, climate, and water-quality data.
  • Build, calibrate, document, and apply numerical groundwater-flow models using MODFLOW-family codes and common pre- and post-processing platforms.
  • Perform predictive simulations for mine dewatering, depressurization, pit inflow, seepage, groundwater drawdown, recovery, closure, and long-term water-management scenarios.
  • Support contaminant-transport and groundwater-quality evaluations.
  • Perform model calibration, sensitivity and uncertainty analyses, water-budget evaluations, and scenario comparisons; support parameter estimation using PEST or similar tools.
  • Develop and maintain efficient modeling workflows using Python/FloPy, R, GIS, databases, and other data-management or visualization tools.
  • Support hydrogeologic field programs, including drilling, monitoring-well installation, aquifer testing, packer testing, groundwater monitoring, and data collection.
  • Interpret aquifer-test and monitoring data and integrate results into project conceptual models and numerical-model inputs.
  • Prepare technical memoranda, modeling reports, figures, tables, proposals, and presentations with limited senior-staff oversight.
  • Coordinate with geochemists, hydrologists, and permitting specialists to integrate groundwater modeling into mine planning, permitting, operations, and closure evaluations.
  • Communicate modeling assumptions, limitations, uncertainty, and results to project managers, clients, and regulators.
  • Support project management, including scope development, budgeting, schedule tracking, and coordination with internal staff and subcontractors.

Benefits

  • Opportunities for ownership in a growing employee-owned company.
  • Competitive salary and benefits.
  • Attractive year-end bonuses.
  • Flexible work environment with potential for remote work.
  • Participation in conferences, technical presentations, and publications.
  • Collaborative atmosphere.
