About The Position

The Microsoft 365 (M365) Senior Engineer serves as a key technical resource within the Modern Workplace Team, supporting the daily operation, administration, and enhancement of King County’s Microsoft 365 tenant. In this role, the engineer provides senior-level expertise across core collaboration and productivity services, including Exchange Online/On-Prem, SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive for Business, Viva modules, Microsoft 365 Apps, eDiscovery, Copilot, and other tenant-wide services. The position ensures these services remain secure, reliable, scalable, and aligned with county-wide technology standards. The engineer performs advanced troubleshooting and root-cause analysis, resolves complex service issues escalated from Tier 1 and Tier 2 support teams, and proactively identifies opportunities to optimize performance and improve the user experience. Responsibilities also include lifecycle management of M365 applications and services, coordinating updates and feature rollouts, maintaining operational documentation, and contributing to automation efforts to increase efficiency and consistency. Through close collaboration with team members, stakeholders, and cross-departmental partners, the M365 Senior Engineer helps ensure platform stability, supports business continuity, and enhances the overall quality and reliability of the County’s modern workplace ecosystem.

Requirements

  • Proven experience administering and supporting Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams, OneDrive, M365 Apps, Viva, and related workloads.
  • Skilled in using PowerShell scripting for automation, bulk actions, reporting, and troubleshooting across Microsoft 365 environments.
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex, multi-service technical problems using strong problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills.
  • Applied knowledge of Microsoft 365 security and compliance, including Conditional Access, MFA, DLP, auditing, and eDiscovery.
  • Experience performing lifecycle management for cloud services, including configuration updates, optimization, feature rollout planning, and governance.
  • Ability to interpret technical standards, documentation, and change-management processes to maintain stable and secure operations.
  • Experience supporting end users and IT teams by handling escalations, providing guidance, and creating troubleshooting documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for diverse audiences and produce clear, accurate documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, business groups, and vendors to resolve issues and improve service delivery.
  • Proficiency using monitoring, analytics, and reporting tools to assess Microsoft 365 platform health, performance, and usage trends.

Nice To Haves

  • Desired Certifications or demonstrated experience related to Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
  • Experience with identity and access management concepts, including Entra ID administration, Conditional Access strategy, and authentication best practices.
  • Familiarity with enterprise governance models for Microsoft 365, including data lifecycle management, retention policies, and information protection.
  • Experience supporting eDiscovery workflows and compliance features such as Content Search, Audit, and DLP.

Responsibilities

  • Provide senior-level administration and operational support for the Microsoft 365 tenant, including Exchange Online/On-Prem, SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive for Business, Viva modules, M365 Apps, Forms, and related collaboration services. This includes maintaining service health, applying updates, managing configurations, and ensuring adherence to operational standards.
  • Troubleshoot advanced technical issues across M365 workloads, including escalated Level 2 and Level 3 incidents. Perform deep-dive analysis, evaluate cross-service dependencies, and collaborate with engineering peers to restore service, mitigate risk, and improve overall platform stability.
  • Support and participate in change management processes, including testing the performance and impact of new features, service updates, and configuration changes prior to implementation. Validate functionality in test environments and provide recommendations to improve reliability and minimize disruption.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve operational documentation, including standard operating procedures, knowledge articles, and runbooks for M365 services. Ensure documentation remains accurate, current, and usable by support teams to improve consistency and quality of service.
  • Automate routine tasks and operational workflows using PowerShell, Graph API, or other scripting tools to improve efficiency, reduce manual effort, and enhance service reliability. Support the development of monitoring and reporting scripts to help maintain environment health.
  • Perform lifecycle management activities for M365 services, including feature rollout coordination, license optimization, configuration updates, and service retirement planning. Ensure compliance with King County standards while improving operability and user experience.
  • Support M365 security, governance, and compliance requirements, including Conditional Access, DLP, MFA, basic identity integrations, eDiscovery, and related protection features. Assist in evaluating security impacts and ensuring configurations align with County policies.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, business partners, and KCIT operational teams to understand service needs, resolve issues, plan improvements, and support the delivery of secure, efficient, and user-friendly M365 services. Provide subject-matter guidance within the Modern Workplace Team.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of technical standards, operational processes, and service improvements to support reliability and consistency across M365 environments. Provide input on roadmaps and future enhancements based on emerging Microsoft features and organizational needs.
  • Monitor capacity, performance, and usage trends across M365 platforms, identifying opportunities to improve performance, optimize resource utilization, and mitigate potential future issues. Provide data-driven insights to leadership and team members.
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex issues handled by operational support staff, offering guidance, mentoring, and technical assistance to improve overall troubleshooting skills and team effectiveness.
  • Participate in project work related to M365 services, contributing technical expertise, assisting with implementation tasks, and delivering components on schedule while adhering to project requirements and IT best practices.

  • Employees will be provided with a County-issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
  • The normal workweek for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Alternative schedules may be considered by your manager.
  • This position will participate on the After-Hours Support (AHS) team rotating across a pool of 12 to 15 staff (24x7, 7-day rotation Monday-Sunday).
  • FLSA Exempt and is not eligible for overtime pay.
