About The Position

The Micro Enterprise (ME) Operations Assistant will work closely with the ME Coordinator and ME artisans to support the daily operations of the design studio, assist artisans with the preparation and presentation of their items for sale, help with the planning and execution of ME sales (onsite and within the community), and provide a safe, supportive and motivational environment for the artisans to work in. This position will also provide support two days per week to My Sister’s Place (MSP) when the ME program is not operational; this will involve supporting the organization and distribution of donations to MSP clients, the delivery of social and recreational programs, and supporting MSP clients’ access to basic needs and food resources, among other duties. Overall, the Canada Summer Jobs position will make a significant and positive contribution to creating safe and meaningful opportunities for ME artisans and MSP clients to engage in community and strengthen their sense of wellbeing, belonging and purpose.

Requirements

  • Will be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and am legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • Post-secondary education completed or in progress within social work, social services, mental health and/or addictions
  • Ability to attend work regularly
  • Current, satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)

Nice To Haves

  • First Aid/CPR
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations and/or individuals with mental health issues is considered an asset
  • Effective communication skills with diverse populations
  • Excellent customer service skills and a strong, demonstrated ability to organize space and inventory
  • Good working knowledge of computer office technology such as word-processing, spreadsheets, database records, internet and e-mail resources, etc. and ability to perform basic financial and documentation requirements related to activities and programs
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to recognize and guide potential conflict situations
  • Knowledge of trauma- and violence-informed practices
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Bilingual in both official languages, preferred

Responsibilities

  • Support the daily operations of the ME design studio, including receiving, sorting, deconstructing, and preparing donated materials for use by artisans
  • Assist with sorting and preparing items that are to be donated to an outside agency
  • Provide encouragement and support to participants of the ME program
  • Assist at public events and/or retail “pop up” events, or Coach House sales as able/required
  • Assist with removal of recyclable materials within Coach House as needed
  • Support the health and safety of the ME design studio, including ensuring that walkways are free of any stored items or debris
  • Communicate inventory levels of donated items to the ME Coordinator, so they can be delegated to My Sisters’ Place staff for the purpose of determining need for public asks for donations
  • Provide support for the general cleaning regiment of the Coach House (i.e. sweeping floors, wiping down highly touch surfaces, etc.)
  • Take apart donated jewelry, sort and put away
  • Assist women in their final presentation of sales tags and inventory
  • Assist with Quality Control of ME products
  • Support with daily operations needs at My Sister’s Place when the ME program is closed; includes donation sorting and distribution, delivery of social and recreational programs, and distribution of basic needs and food resources
  • Other activities as required

Benefits

  • $17.60 per hour
  • Immediately eligible for optional enrolment in the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP)
