About The Position

Bandera Electric Cooperative (BEC) and BEC Fiber are seeking a Metering Applications Engineer to join their Engineering Department. This role is responsible for leading and executing engineering activities, applying technical knowledge to ensure the electrical system meets current and future requirements. The engineer will provide data analysis and recommendations for various cooperative functions including Outage management, Dispatch systems, Energy Efficiency and Sustainability, Distributed Generation Interconnections, and engineering planning systems. The position focuses on ensuring adequate metering of electrical systems, analyzing large datasets for optimized energy usage, and managing projects related to smart grid applications and energy topics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in an electric utility system.
  • Experience with primary and secondary metering and service equipment.
  • Experience with AMI systems technology is desired.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License and Related Insurance.
  • Must pass a background and drug screening.
  • Knowledge of large data collection methods, analyses, and verification of data.
  • Knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC) and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
  • Thorough knowledge of electric metering safety requirements and safe work practices.
  • Ability to provide recommendations in improving the metering systems.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on market transforming projects and programs that promote future technologies, energy efficiency and sustainability.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and assistance in the engineering activities of the cooperative.
  • Oversee all metering applications, activities, and technical support services, including monitoring calibration, selection of metering devices, associated transformers/transducers, testing and repair, and technical assessments.
  • Assist in developing and documenting manufacturing assembly processes, specifications, procedures, product and cost analysis, technical material for bid documentation, and providing technical training.
  • Guide and develop energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives using Apolloware DERMS and metering platforms.
  • Focus on metering and verification services for demand side management and research projects involving distributed generation, energy storage, HVAC systems, and pumps.
  • Analyze large datasets to identify and recommend schemes for optimizing energy usage for a resilient and reliable electric grid.
  • Oversee all functions related to BEC lighting, including inventory, light standards, sensors, and installation/maintenance processes.
  • Collaborate with other engineers to evaluate and analyze the electric grid, including transmission, substation, and distribution systems.
  • Manage assigned projects, including planning, design, construction, and operation.
  • Work closely with system operations to ensure the availability and functioning of the metering system during normal and outage scenarios.
  • Cooperate with the optical fiber communications group to integrate next-generation grid devices.
  • Regularly monitor Aclara meter alerts to ensure proper functioning and software updates.
  • Address and assist others in addressing member and employee questions and complaints.
  • Utilize engineering planning and designing software such as Aclara, Apolloware, or Milsoft.
  • Review new and existing technologies and evaluate trends in the metering industry and associated software platforms.
  • Recommend and integrate changes to meter installation, monitoring, and billing processes.
  • Provide guidance and/or assistance in the maintenance, upgrade, and integration of Outage Management and dispatch systems.
  • Manage projects and schedules for smart grid applications and energy topics, and create new business development initiatives.
  • Operate BEC’s enterprise software, such as NiSC.
  • Assist with departmental budgets and special projects.
  • Represent the Cooperative at local, state, and national organizations and meetings.
