About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to perform general/clerical work functions associated with reading and recording water usage data from meters. This role involves locating and reading residential, commercial, and industrial water meters on an assigned route, operating a motor vehicle for meter reading activities, and recording water meter data. Additionally, the position requires checking meters for malfunctions, performing general maintenance on water meters and meter boxes, and conducting minor preventive maintenance on the assigned vehicle. Communication via telephone and two-way radio is essential for providing information, relaying messages, and responding to service requests. The role also involves responding to routine information requests and performing miscellaneous errands.

Requirements

  • Must be able to operate a variety of equipment and tools including a motor vehicle, two-way radio, telephone, metal detector, shovel, and mechanic tools.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things which may include forms, reports, maps, and meter books.
  • Ability to speak with and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, including giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants as well as communicating with the general public.
  • Ability to read a variety of water meter related documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures.
  • Ability to complete forms and to write basic job-related documentation and reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.

  • Ability to learn and understand simple meter reading principles and techniques.

  • Ability to visually inspect items for proper length, width, and shape using job related equipment.
  • Ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using job related equipment and to operate motor vehicles.
  • Ability to handle a variety of items, job related equipment, control knobs, switches, etc.
  • Ability to use one hand for twisting motion or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities.
  • Minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Ability to talk, express, or exchange ideas by means of spoken words and/or hear and perceive nature of sounds by ear.

Responsibilities

  • Locates and reads residential, commercial, and industrial water meters on an assigned route.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to conduct meter reading activities.
  • Records water meter data in meter book; ensures completeness and accuracy of information entered in meter book.
  • Checks meters for malfunctions; performs general maintenance on water meters and meter boxes (e.g., digs ground area around meters; removes debris from meter box; repairs meter box/lid; replaces broken/damaged meter boxes; etc.).
  • Performs minor preventive maintenance functions on assigned vehicle; checks fluid levels; makes recommendations on vehicle repairs.
  • Prepares and/or receives various forms, reports, or other documentation; completes, processes, and/or forwards as appropriate; maintains records.
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service.
  • Responds to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.
  • May provide assistance to other positions as needed.
  • Conducts miscellaneous errands as assigned (e.g., transporting mail to post office, picking up supplies, etc.).
  • Performs other related duties as required.
