About The Position

The Meter Reader reads residential and commercial water meters and records readings for billing purposes. The role also includes meter rereads, reporting damaged or inoperable meters and district facility issues, and performing other contract-related activities such as water service connections or disconnections and door-tag notifications. The Meter Reader maintains assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment, follows safety policies, and works in varied weather and outdoor conditions. A minimum pace of 100 meter connections per hour is required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the internet.
• Ability to use basic office equipment and phone systems.
• Ability to work with numbers, including calculations.
• Basic map-reading ability and GPS skills.
• Ability to read meters.
• Working knowledge of billing and payment processing.
• Communicate clearly and professionally; contribute to positive internal and external customer experiences; be willing to help others and work as a team; and maintain composure in challenging situations.
• Pay attention to detail, identify and solve problems, escalate issues appropriately, check work for quality, and maintain good awareness.
• Work well with supervision, complete projects, follow company policies and standard operating procedures, manage multiple tasks, and manage time effectively.
• Demonstrate a positive attitude, act in accordance with company vision, mission, and values, take accountability for performance, and be willing to take on additional assignments.
• Frequently lift 20–40 pounds and load, unload, and move large equipment and tools, including shovels and hand pumps.
• Access confined spaces; continuously walk, climb stairs, and walk through ditches and wooded areas.
• Work in all weather conditions.
• Meet the minimum meter-reading pace of 100 connections per hour.

Responsibilities

• Accurately read and record commercial and residential water meters for billing purposes.
• Check and report inoperable meters, damaged or missing meter boxes, and missing lids.
• Report leaks, sinkholes, or damage to district facilities.
• Perform meter rereads and other contract-related activities, including water service connections or disconnections and door-tag notifications.
• Keep assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment clean.
• Follow safety policies and procedures, wear personal protective equipment, and report safety concerns.
