Metallic Materials Engineer

Brunswick Corporation•Fond du Lac, WI
•$73,600 - $117,900

About The Position

The Metallic Materials Engineer at Mercury Marine applies knowledge of metallic alloys, processing methods, and material performance to support current products and new product introductions. The engineer independently manages materials test requests, including product and supplier component validation and failure analysis. This is primarily a laboratory role, involving approximately 75% materials testing setup and execution and 25% report writing and meetings. The engineer connects laboratory findings with manufacturing history and service conditions to develop practical engineering recommendations, while building proficiency in advanced characterization techniques with support from experienced specialists. The role includes evaluating metallic components, investigating failure mechanisms and contributing factors, recommending materials and processes, collaborating with engineering and supply-chain stakeholders, and documenting and presenting findings. The engineer also safely operates assigned laboratory equipment and performs routine checks, calibration, and basic maintenance as qualified.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of relevant engineering experience in metallic materials, metallurgy, or manufacturing, including hands-on laboratory testing, materials evaluation, and contributing to failure investigations.

Nice To Haves

  • Practical experience in at least one manufacturing process or product area, including familiarity with process controls, typical defects, and their effects on component performance.
  • Hands-on exposure to SEM/EDS and/or XRD, including sample preparation, data acquisition, or interpretation for materials characterization or failure analysis.
  • Experience connecting laboratory findings with production or supplier process information to support root-cause investigations and verification of corrective actions.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct materials evaluations for product validation, manufacturing support, and failure investigations of metallic components.
  • Work with stakeholders to establish engineering objectives, review component history and specifications, and select test methods, priorities, and acceptance criteria while considering cost and turnaround time.
  • Conduct failure investigations using materials laboratory techniques to identify failure mechanisms and contributing factors.
  • Apply and develop proficiency in scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), with guidance on advanced operation and interpretation.
  • Provide material and processing recommendations for aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel, brass, and bronze alloys, relating composition, microstructure, and processing history to component requirements and performance.
  • Collaborate with design engineering, manufacturing, supplier quality, and purchasing to investigate material or process concerns, evaluate corrective actions, and collect technical evidence for new materials and processes.
  • Document test methods, results, conclusions, and recommendations in clear, concise, and timely reports, distinguishing supported findings from hypotheses and identifying limitations or additional testing needs.
  • Present results to cross-functional internal stakeholders and external supply-chain representatives as needed.
  • Safely operate assigned materials laboratory equipment according to established training and procedures.
  • Perform routine equipment checks, calibration, and basic maintenance as qualified, and coordinate specialized testing when needed.
