Metallic Additive Materials Application Engineer

GE Aerospace•West Chester, PA

About The Position

The Metallic Additive Materials Application Engineer provides materials expertise and technical leadership across multiple materials and additive components. As part of GE Aerospace’s Additive Integrated Product Team, the engineer sets strategy and leads alloy and modality development programs supporting commercial and military aviation products. The role partners with manufacturing, design, sourcing, and quality engineers and uses daily management to advance technology and production readiness. Technologies may include Electron Beam Melting (EBM), Binder Jet, Cold Spray, Directed Energy Deposition (DED), and Direct Metal Laser Melting (DMLM), with alloys including titanium, aluminum, nickel-based, and cobalt-based alloys. The engineer supports additively manufactured hardware and leads or contributes to cross-functional technical programs that reduce risks associated with new materials and machines. The position also supports production capacity, product quality, specification development, process improvement, and the adoption of non-destructive methods. It requires communication with leadership, technical roadmap input, and the ability to influence teams and processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Materials Science or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a materials science engineering position or a related additive manufacturing position.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference for 5 years of experience in a materials science engineering position or a related additive manufacturing position.
  • Significant experience in a complex industrial environment, preferably aerospace, in materials application engineering, materials development, and/or engineering program management.
  • Subject-matter expertise in a key materials science area or breadth across multiple disciplines.
  • In-depth understanding of metallurgy, manufacturing processes, and inspections associated with aircraft engine parts.
  • Understanding of processing-versus-property tradeoffs and material-data application.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, particularly in technical documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including the ability to manage difficult situations and foster positive outcomes under pressure.
  • Ability to communicate complex problems and ideas clearly to different audiences.
  • Self-motivated ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate several projects simultaneously.
  • Effective problem-identification and solution skills.
  • Proven analytical and organizational ability.
  • Experience with aerospace or gas-turbine industry manufacturing, quality systems, and development.
  • Experience with primary processing of aircraft engine parts, including forging, casting, additive manufacturing, and heat treatment, for structures and/or rotating parts and materials.
  • Proven ability to work independently and with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to guide and influence others, especially those not in a direct reporting position.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems.
  • Program management skills, including the ability to develop, document, market, and execute programs.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with design engineering, Supply Chain, and Colibrium to increase additive manufacturing capacity and productivity while maintaining product quality through quality and SPS planning.
  • Provide technical guidance and promote communication among additive materials application engineers, manufacturing, and design teams regarding additive technology and capability development.
  • Support additively manufactured hardware and partner with design and manufacturing to ensure designs are producible and meet product intent.
  • Lead cross-functional teams and execute technical projects and programs that reduce technical risk associated with new additive materials and machines.
  • Design and conduct studies to characterize the impact of manufacturing process-window variation, and recommend updates to specifications, technical plans, and standard work instructions.
  • Identify lessons learned and best practices and encourage their documentation.
  • Use structural problem-solving tools such as TOPS8D, DMAIC, and RCCA to lead cross-functional teams in resolving problems and improving processes; mentor others in these tools.
  • Own or author key quality-assurance specifications controlling powder, printed castings, and finished-part standards; improve efficiency and update additive specifications as needed.
  • Advocate for Lean processes that reduce waste, improve quality, and reduce manufacturing and quality-assurance cycle time and cost while maintaining quality and safety.
  • Lead or support efforts to ensure part quality with less reliance on physical testing and increased reliance on non-destructive methods, including in-process monitoring.
  • Communicate significant developments to leadership and consult on technical roadmap development.
  • Communicate business goals, programs, and processes for an area or business segment.
