About The Position

This position provides patient care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse for a group of patients for a designated time frame. The Mental Health Tech provides care and interaction to these patients via therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, and the environment with assistance from other healthcare members. This person functions as a member of the therapeutic team as designed by the policies and procedures of Piedmont Behavioral Health. The Emergency Department is a 38-bed unit that sees on average 160 patients a day presenting with various acuities. We are a primary Stroke and STEMI receiving facility. We have two helicopter pads on campus for utilization. Patients are assigned to one of five PODs depending on acuity, including a Behavioral Health Pod. Staff members work in close collaboration with ED Providers to provide exceptional care.

Requirements

  • H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) Required
  • No experience required
  • BLS - American Heart Association Required
  • Crisis Prevention within 60 days of hire Required

Nice To Haves

  • Hospital Behavioral Health experience highly preferred
  • B.S/B.A in behavioral health sciences Preferred
  • Experience in Behavioral health and/or addictive disease Preferred
  • NIH highly preferred, must obtain within allotted timeframe.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the mission of the organization as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the provision of the highest quality healthcare to include individualized patient and family-centered, holistic and supportive care in a safe and caring environment.

  • Functions as a member of the therapeutic team as designed by the policies and procedures of Piedmont Behavioral Health.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to provide appropriate care for psychiatric and/or chemical dependency patients.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development, range of treatment and care of patients appropriate to ages of patients served.
  • Ability to gather data and document patient care.
  • Promotes customer service initiatives along with P Medical Center’s Service Values.
  • Documents all patient care and observed patient behaviors using the nursing process, based on established hospital policies and procedures, unit specific policies and procedures, and/or Standards of Care/Practice.
  • Serves as the patient and family advocate with respect to the patient's right to privacy by protecting confidential information.
  • Participates and cooperates in the unit based Performance Improvement process.
  • Follows established guidelines for reporting a significant medical error or unanticipated outcome in the patient’s care that results in patient harm or potential harm.
  • Attends in-service presentations and completes all mandatory education requirements timely.
  • Utilizes treatment model and nursing process for individual care to meet needs of patients.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform technical skills and procedures.
  • Promotes compliance with National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Provides total hygiene care including skin care, bathing, toileting, etc.
  • Assists with patient ambulation in room, hall, and bathroom.
  • Assists in feeding patients, offering fluids and snacks, recording amounts consumed.
  • Documents vital signs and informs nurse of any change in patient status.
  • Assists with stocking supplies and maintains clean working environment.
  • Assists co-workers to meet patient care needs.
  • Implements ordered level of observation (e.g., q 15 mins, line of sight, or 1:1) and documents such observation in the medical record.
  • Regular, punctual, and dependable attendance.
  • As a crisis prevention intervention trained staff member, responds appropriately to a manpower request.
  • Actively seeks ways to control costs without compromising patient safety, quality of care, or the services delivered.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system and uses systems to report potential patient safety issues.
  • Uses Performance Improvement Plan to improve patient safety.
  • Ensures each round performed is a purposeful round.
  • Other duties as assigned.
