About The Position

This is responsible work in providing guidance for patients with home and employment adjustment problems, alcoholism or any type of problems requiring allied health care delivery. An employee in this class is responsible for establishing and maintaining liaisons between the Mental Health Association and various programs which provide services that contribute to the health care of patients.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a recognized college or university with a Master's Degree in Guidance or Social Work; OR Bachelor's Degree in Sociology, Social Science, Guidance, Social Work or any closely related field plus one (1) year experience in areas dealing with any of the related fields.
  • Knowledge of General social legislation and regulations in the Virgin Islands.
  • Knowledge of available community resources such as instructions, clinics, and cooperating agencies.
  • Knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures concerning various Mental Health Program.
  • Knowledge of the psychological aspects of mental health counseling, and the importance of interpersonal relationships with all the persons contacted during the course of the work.
  • Ability to observe situations objectively and record them accurately.

Responsibilities

  • Counsels patients referred for help in job placement, social adjustment, public assistance, etc. who are experiencing problems in adjusting to certain social conditions.
  • Serves as liaison between the division Health Association in all of the associations and the mental activities and alcoholics anonymous with specific responsibility to work with those patients who have been diagnosed as alcoholics.
  • Serves as liaison between the schools and the Mental Health Division tracking children who are under treatment in the Division, and keeping the teachers informed of their progress, collecting data on these children, and giving individual instructions in a limited number of cases.
  • Participates in any research conducted by the Division, and in the program of Community Mental Health Education.
  • Counsels patients about their problems and about health programs such as those for alcoholics and drug users.
