About The Position

The Opportunity: Position is a 12 month/40 hour per week. Primary responsibilities are to provide individual, couples, and group counseling using a brief treatment framework of counseling. Crisis intervention is also an essential job duty for this position. Must be able to conduct appropriate assessments, provide feedback on these assessments, and give appropriate referrals for students who have needs exceeding the scope of work provided by Counseling Services. The counselor will also consult with Wellness Center providers regarding student needs. Provide consultation services to concerned faculty, students, and staff. This position may see students mandated to attend counseling by the University for sanctions associated with infractions of the Universities Drug and Alcohol policy. The counselor will work collaboratively with the Counseling Center staff, meeting weekly with the Counseling Director. Protocols are in place and will be followed as far as the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners and ACA Code of Ethics. Will continue to keep current in counseling practices by attending professional conferences and training sessions, required for licensing. This position may require public presentations to various groups on campus by providing wellness education and outreach to students and staff in conjunction with Human Resources. This position may require some after-hours availability based on need. Responsibility of maintaining one’s own up to date and active Liability Insurance is required. In the Mental Health Counselor II position you will be required to sit in as acting Director of Counseling Services in their absence, or as needed by request of the acting Director. This would require performing the duties of the Director which includes, but is not limited to, providing supervision to any LAC counselors if needed, being a point of contact for the Campus Community and departments, attending weekly Dean of Students meeting and Behavioral Intervention meetings to provide input, and maintain overall operations needs of the Counseling Department.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Counseling, Counseling Psychology, or related field.
  • LAC- Licensed Associate Counselor in Arizona (for Mental Health Counselor I).
  • LPC Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Arizona (for Mental Health Counselor II).
  • Candidate will need to be independently licensed, and not need clinical supervision hours (for Mental Health Counselor II).
  • Experience in assessment, diagnosis, and implementation of interventions for depression, anxiety, alcohol/drug use/abuse, and developmental concerns frequently faced by college students.
  • Must understand DSM-5.
  • Familiarity with frequently used assessment tools such as the BDI, BAI, DES-11, AUDIT and /ADHD Amen checklist.
  • Knowledge on creating and/or modifying PowerPoints for presentations.
  • Must be able to handle increased stress levels and multi-task.
  • Must be computer literate and able to work independently.
  • Must be willing to learn and work well under direction of others.
  • Must be able to work closely with Counseling Center staff.
  • Must show professionalism.
  • Flexibility is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Completed training to provide clinical supervision and being registered on the AZBBHE site as a clinical supervisor is a plus (for Mental Health Counselor II).
  • Prefer minimum 2 years working experience in a university counseling center.
  • Experience working with many different facets of a college campus community.
  • Experience providing services to a diverse population of students.
  • Some experience with college counseling programming.
  • Experience with working with adults in an outpatient setting.
  • Have a sense of humor.
